My Safeway Shopping Trip

The Whole Load

I did it! I spent $55.27 out of pocket, used $42.56 worth of coupons (manufacturer's & eCoupons) and used $63.67 in Club Card Savings.

Here are the details:
  • One $10 Kohl's cash printed
  • No matter how diligent I am in keeping track of my total, I'm always wrong. This time I was off by about $3, which is pretty good considering how many manufacturer's and eCoupons I used.
  • The Breyer's $2 catalina did not print
  • The Home For The Holiday's catalina did not print. This was my scenario:
5 Betty Crocker Frosting = $9.95
2 Progresso Broth = $6.50
1 Gold Medal Flour = $1.50
2 Breyer's Ice Cream = $5.98
1 Bisquick = $2.50
Total = $26.43

Total OOP = $9.51 after store sales, coupons & eCoupons
Totally sweet, if only it would have worked. Several possible reasons why the cat didn't print: only 2 out of 5 Betty Crocker Frostings counted towards the $25 and I counted on $9.95 applying; only 1 out of 2 Progresso Broth counted; the Breyer's doesn't count (it's not tagged at my store).
I used probably 20 internet printable coupons without any problems at all -- and several were identical (legit coupons, not copies) -- (5) $.50/1 Betty Crocker Frosting coupons, (2) $.50/1 Progresso Broth coupons. Those of you who are running into problems with your store accepting multiples and doubling IPs really need to find a more coupon-friendly store.

Close-ups

Despite my two catalinas not printing, I am happy with my purchase. I would have spent close to $40 just on the diapers at Costco and I scored a bunch of "real" food too. I will also get a $5 rebate from SC Johnson on the Glade candles & refills.

I'm planning to do another Home For The Holidays promo along with a Post Grape Nuts deal once my Grape Nuts coupons arrive in the mail. I need one more $10/$50 Safeway coupon, if any of my real-life-friends have one to spare!

And remember to buy The Sunday Oregonian if you need filler items to get to your target amount!

did you have the "free" glade coupons with you?
so- even with a total over $150 to begin wtih, and going down to $59.45, I only had 1 Kohl's cash print. Why do you think some have received two?

I wish I had taken a pic of my deals to show you, too!!

I spent 54.30 and saved $110.49 between ecoupons, safeway coupons and manufacturers coupons. Got chickens, turkey breast and lots of yogurt for almost FREE. My dairy section had lots of mark downs and coupling those with my ecoupons and manufacturers, it was cheaper than Albertsons this week! I got one $10 at Kohls to boot! I just love it when sales like this happen. Did not even try to get to $25 for the home for the holidays this trip. But, may do that again this month. I still thought the brown sugar and flour were good deals with my coupons.

I ended up being about .30 off the kohls b/c apparantly milk doesn't count toward the $50. So I argued with the manager and he ended up just giving me a $10 safeway gift card. Did pretty good.

Thanks soooo much for all of your hard work on this...and with a brand new baby, too. You're amazing! Check your receipt for
$2.00 automatically deducted for the Breyer's, that's what happened at check-out for me. Also, no Kohl's (total OOP was $42.41), and no glade spray cats printed, but I did get the HFTH $5.00 cat., and the 'Free' milk cat. (from 4 frosted mini wheats). I took my receipt to Cust. Serv. and they gave me $10.00 cash (Yay!) in place of the Kohl's $. How do you know if your cellfire and other ecoupons get deducted? Thanks again. I feel like I scored BIG TIME!

If you have trouble with your store, go to the safeway site and check out their coupon policy. It is fairly clear.

Your cellfire coupons show on the receipt directly after the item and say Mfr. eCoupon.

My safeway on 122nd and powell is having a grand reopening and I received a mailer with a coupon for free eggs, cereal, $5.00 off meat and 10% off my grocery purchases for the next 30 days! I am so exited :-)

I didn't get the ice cream catalina (tho my kids are thrilled there's ice cream in the house) and I blew it on the Kohl's because $8.00 of my puchase was on milk. I didn't read ALL the fine print, and it had to be $50.00 AFTER all coupons! The $2.00 off DID show up on my receipt, but the price is still wrong on the ice cream. It says I paid $4.99 per unit, and then they deducted $1.00, which made it $3.99, and then you count the $2.00 off on the receipt and it ends up being $2.99, which is the price advertised, so I didn't get the extra $2.00 off. I'm going to run down to my Damascus Safeway and ask them about it. They are real good to couponers AND regular customers. The register wouldn't take off the $10.00, so they subtracted $15.00 instead!

The Home for the Holidays items are very confusing, the signs are everywhere but only apply to certain items. I thought I had it covered but came up short by $.90 after reviewing it with customer service (I thought the Jello was part of it), they gave me $5 cash in the end and admited that its confusing.

After much deliberation, planning, and consideration, I opted out of this whole Safeway thing. I typically don't shop there because it's a huge rip-off. Considering how confused everyone is/was, and how many people didn't receive what they were expecting, I won't dare waste my time. I will, however, stop in this evening for some .50 cereal and look at clearance items. Sorry everyone had such a hard time!

I went with my binder and a plan. I spent 55.00 I used 9.?? in coupons and 54.00 in clubcard savings. The HFTH printed. NO Khols..but we don't have a khols in Bend yet. Thanks ladies!!!

I'm with you, Dsperin. Just too confusing. I don't really need any of that stuff, or I can get it cheaper at Albertson's. Not worth the hassle this time!

my trip was very successful! OOP was $66.67 after $90.71 in ecoupons, mfr coupons, and club savings. I didn't do the HFTH, but did receive $20 in Kohl's cash. I ended up in the store manager's line and she was super sweet, I handed her my stack of coupons and when she was finished, she looked at me and said "where's your $10/$50?" I told her my FoodDay didn't have one. She signed my receipt and told me that if I happened to find one, to bring it in and she would reimburse me! SOOOOO, this is where I reach out. If anyone has one they aren't using, or has an extra, I would be totally thankful as our budget is super tight since we are still recovering from my hubby not having a job for a couple months. Email me at
jah31905@hotmail if you can help out and I'll send you my address so the coupon can be mailed. Thanks in advance if you can help!!

If you want to take advantage of the holiday deal, all the McCormick seasoning are on sale, pair them with the IP thats out there and its a good way to stock up on seasonings and get to the $25.

So I just returned from my Safeway cereal deal, and WHAT A HASSLE! I'm no idiot, and I know how to add/subtract coupons and I calculated that my total for my 11 boxes of cereal would be $5.75 after clubs savings/promo and MFQ's. When my total came to $16, I knew something was wrong. The poor cashier and people behind me! I wasn't going to pay that ridiculous price, so she had to fgure out what was going on. Turned out that a couple were the wrong size (even though I grabbed from the right section of the shelf), AND that I had to buy in increments of 4. I thought it was just buy 4+. After everything was (apparently) figured out and I had added one more box to my cart, my total was $6. Ok, I guess. But this is why I avoide Safeway like the plague.

Oh-- and if anyone wants Pillsbury Toaster Strudels and Yoplus cheap, go use your $1/1 coupons at Winco where they're only $1.78 before coupon. ALSO, at the Safeway customer service desk, there are Morningstar holiday recipe books and on the back are 5 $2/1 coupons. At Winco right now all of their stuff is $2.84-- big savings on vegetarian stuff.

I might not be one of your "real-life" friends, but I just offered Jessica a $10 off $50 coupon she requested by commenting on this post and I thought I might offer you one, too. If you're interested, let me know. I always end up with extras, and there's no way I'll use them all!

OR if you don't want to meet strangers just come to my complex. I'm the manager and we have extra Food Days every week so you could just have one.

I went to Safeway last night and easily did quite well.

Here's a post I wrote about it for "The Non-Consumer Advocate."

Just saw this in today's Oregonian. I don't know if the $5 savings is a coupon or rebate but worth it to check out.

Maria, looks like they will send coupons to me (but I am new to this) but I noticed the duncan hines brownies are on there..safeway has them at .99 cents, so if you bought five towards your hfth promo in one transaction this month, then it would definitely be worth sending it off to see what you get!

my $4 off 4 cereals did not come off but once I showed the ad to the checker, she manually took it off.

Then I did not get the $5 off $25 home for Holidays, so I went to customer service and she just gave me $5.

You need to be calm and have time to shope slowly and carefully at Safeway. The savings do pay off.

Thank you for your excellent site.

I went to the Manager's desk today to ask for a morningstar booklet, the manger knew nothing about it. bummer. Winco takes coupons? I am very new to coupons, so thanks for the great info.

I had no issue with the HFTH program this afternoon. I did do their Free Breakfast promo and they were out of OJ and the cashier did sub the Tropicana I grabbed but said they normally don't do that (in that case have plenty on hand Safeway before you run your promos).

Dsperin, I've had many problems with Albertsons and their promos. Neither store is perfect :)

Great Job Angela, Thanks for posting your deals and pictures. I also appreciate it when you mention that deals don't always work out for you like you intend them to. There are times when I figure out my total and then for some reason it comes out more than I figured out or the catalina doesn't print. I have learned after 7 months of couponing that it is a fact of life and these things happen but it is nice to know that it's not just me, that we all go through it. I don't get to do the deals until tomorrow because I don't get my grocery money until then. It would have been fun to take part in the Kohls deal and the free stuff this weekend but I can't spend money I don't have. Thanks for all of your hard work.

Ruth said...

Sadly none of my Cellfire coupons were taken off at my Safeway trip today. Any idea why?

And I wholeheartedly agree with the above - thanks for all your hard work!

Laurie J, you rock for knowing what deals (and timing) are best for your situation.

I think I did this deal just because it looked exciting, but am not sure that I really saved that much. Honestly, it just gave me a chance to buy some produce and meat and get a bit back (via the kohls cash) but in my case, I think i spent more on the hfth promo to reach the 60 dollar goal than I would have at albies on those same items. So it's all a wash. You'll find some killer deals on your own schedule!
