Safeway Shopping Strategy: Planning For This Weekend

It's coming. The big weekend -- time to take advantage of all the overlapping deals running at Safeway!
Several people have commented in the past that they do not take advantage of the $10/$50 coupon or Super Coupon deals because they never spend that much money at Safeway. I totally understand, especially if you're used to shopping at WinCo for the bulk of your groceries.

Here are some ideas on what you can purchase to hit your target amount without being forced to pay more than you're used to:
  • Buy meat, dairy & produce -- Safeway's prices are pretty competitive on perishable items and many believe their selection to be of a higher quality. Look especially for clearanced meat. Freeze it if you're not planning to use it right away.
  • Do the Huggies diaper deal -- now you have almost $29 going towards your $50 total buying something many of you have to buy anyway:
Huggies Box Diapers on sale $27.99 with Super Coupon
Buy 1 Box = $27.99
Buy 1 Jumbo Pack of Newborn or Overnites = $9.99
Use (2) $2/1 coupons
Use $3/2 Cellfire eCoupon
Use $1.50/1 Shortcuts coupon
Use 2 Safeway doubles (-$1)
$28.48 after coupons & doubles = 17.8 cents/each size 4
  • Buy toilet paper, feminine products or pet food -- an easy way to get to the target amount on items that are more difficult to get for free. Check out the Cottonelle and Kotex deals running until Sunday.
  • Do a Glade candle deal -- it's a moneymaker when coupled with the SC Johnson $5 rebate.
  • Do a Home For The Holidays deal -- The $5 catalina and $10/$50 coupon should more than make up for the higher prices. You can also just buy the great deals, like the Betty Crocker Cake Mix & Frosting deal, Gold Medal Flour, Breyers and Progresso Broth. That's my plan.
  • Do a couple of Mix & Match Cereal deals (limit 20) -- this is a great opportunity to stock up on your favs!
My plan is to hit Safeway early tomorrow. I'll post my loot as soon as I can. I may need a wide-angle lens.

Where was the $10/$50 coupon? Last Sundays paper?

It was in the food day.

Angela, I may see you there. I too live in Damascus.

A lingering question seems to be whether the Kohl's cat will print if your final total is less than $50. Even though the fine print on it says only Safeway coupons are excluded, not manufacturer coupons, it seems to be not printing for a lot of people. If you find a definitive answer that would be awesome!

Yes, I also would like to know where the $10/$50 coupon is.
Thanks!

I had 2 computer printed coupons today for KashiGo Lean (I was buying 2 boxes) and my local Safeway told me that they only accept 1 computer coupon per item type. Is this a new thing? Can anyone give me advise. Does anyone know the specifics of Safeways coupon policy, or does it vary by store? Thanks.

I'm SO bummed that I'll miss this weekend! I'm on bedrest and I can;t even bribe my husband to go because he'll be gone! Will there be other deals like this in the next few weeks or am I missing out on the "mother load'?

Caitlin: No, I think there will be some better ones at Albertsons in the next three weeks. I could be totally wrong, of course!

On the Cellfire I don't see a $3/2 Huggies? I only see a $1/1. Am I looking in the wrong spot? And can you use Cellfire/mfr coupons together (ie it doesnt count as two mfr coupons?). Thanks for the help...trying to figure out the Safeway deal. :)

@anonymous:
I also had Safeway refuse a coupon because they will only take one like (internet printed) coupon per visit and also for being more than half of the product's value and one time because the coupon's exp date was more than __ (cant remember their arbitrary number) in advance. I used it in late Aug/ early Sept and the coupon exp date was 12/31/09 and they would not take it.

This is the only SW policy I am aware of:

I did my trip last night and had $150 before coupons and $46 after and got no Kohls gift cards. However, I was able to use two like printables with no problems. I also did not get my $5 cat for the HFTH promotion because my total was only $9 after coupons. Missed two deals but sure saved a lot anyway!

Ruth: Looks like the $3/2 coupon was pulled recently, along with a bunch of other ones. If anyone had the $3/2 stored on their card already they can load the $1/1 Huggies and get a nice double dip.

MQs, cellfire & shortcuts will all deduct from your total.

No catalina on the breyers. I am happy with the stuff I got for my money, but also no Kohl's for me.

I spent over $50 on diapers AFTER coupons and NO Kohl's Cash. I was told diapers don't count.

I did my safeway trip today and my total after coupons was $52.00. I was told that we are out of area (I live in McMinnville). The checker asked the manager and he told her that I could call customer service on Monday and that they would give me a "credit". We'll see what they say on Monday, I'll keep you posted.

interesting...no breyers catalina for me either. anyone get one today (sat) wyb 2 @ 2.99. wondering if i should have asked cust. service

I spent $125, $29 was the Home for the Holidays deal, and no catalinas printed. The cashier did not care, I was making her late for her break by asking about it. My "free" breakfast items also did not all ring up for free, the butter super coupon did not ring up for both even though it was limit two, and to top it off the cashier forgot to give me one of my items. Ugh!

I"m EAGERLY awaiting your post. I sooooo want to score big on this one, but really can't even fathom how to put together the best deal scenario at all.

I spent $133 before coupons/club card and $52 after. I got the Kohl's cat but not the HFTH cat. I tried to make sure everything going toward the $25 for the HFTH was tagged, but somehow missed it. I think the five BC cake mix and frostings only counted as 3.98 towards it not 9.95. Oh well....I'm happy with the Kohl's.

I just got back from Safeway and my bill was $138 and after all my coupons it came to $50.11, but I didn't get the Kohl's cat, so I went to the customer service desk and asked about it, and they told me because I purchased milk, that did not count towards the $50 for the Kohl's cat!

My total was $137.56 before coupons/discounts. After coupons/discounts it was $52.20. I was bummed because I had another $2 loaded on my card that would have made total $50.20 but I forgot that card at home(can't remember the phone number I attached to that card cause it was so long ago) so I had to use my parent's phone number. Regardless, I had $28 before coupons for the HFTH deal and $21 after...still printed the $5 off. No Kohls coupon for me though...live in bend, or. We don't have a Kohl's here so maybe that's why. Over 62% savings.

Woodburn isn't doing the Kohls, but I got a heck of a deal on everything else and I use everything, didn't buy anything I didn't need/want/use. Thank you so much!!

So- I went at 5AM to my safeway. I was up and figured I better go before the "crowds"! (it felt a little like a black Friday for me!!)
Total: $150.06 after clubcard and e-coupons, $89.70 before mfr coupons, and $59.45 at the end! (+ $10 Kohl's cash, and $5 off next order home for holidays catalina.)
I had a $10/$50 coupon, but also a 10% off total over $50 which my cashier rang up before my mfr. coupons, giving me $10 and an additional $15.80 off!! I don't know why- but I received an awesome mailer card from SW with lots of "FREE" items. YEAH for SAFEWAY! total savings: $167.35!!!!

My total was $142; after club card and coupons I paid $67 and my $10 Kohls cash and $5 cat printed! Plus a $2 off Mom to Mom product and a $2 off Seventh Generation product printed as well! Score! It was a great day at Safeway!
