Oh, it’s my favorite Sunday of the year! We are getting FIVE, yes FIVE, manufacturer’s coupon inserts this Sunday’s newspaper (1/2):
- 2 SmartSource inserts
- 2 Red Plum inserts
- 1 General Mills insert
PLUS we are getting Albertsons double coupons! It’s the perfect couponing storm!
Regardless of what type of couponer you are — extreme, regular, occasional, lurker or in-the-closet — this is the week to stock up on Sunday papers. Seriously, go big or go home. On normal weeks I usually get 1-2 papers, when I can remember, but this Sunday I will be getting a minimum of 6 Oregonians (the paper with the best coupons in the Pacific Northwest).
Why so many? We will be referring to the coupons released in the 1/2 paper for MONTHS to come. I promise, you will be kicking yourself if you let Sunday pass you by without getting your papers.
I know the next question — will I pay full price for them? Yes, I will just pay the ridiculous $2 per paper out-of-pocket, because I know the return on my investment will make any investor drool. And I’m too lazy (or busy) to pursue other avenues.
If shelling out $10-$20 just for manufacturer’s coupons sends you into a cold sweat, there are other options:
1. Ask friends, family and neighbors for their unused inserts. Yes, set aside your pride and admit to others that you use coupons.
2. Hit up Starbucks and diners and take the inserts from newspapers already purchased. Facebook Kate & I did this a few months ago and were able to score three sets of inserts from one Starbuck’s visit. And we looked super-cool doing it.
3. Stroll your neighborhood streets the night before the garbage man comes and grab inserts from people’s recycling bins. Or go recycling-bin diving. Whatever it takes, right?
4. If you’re in the Puget Sound area, your local Dollar Tree sells the Tacoma News Tribune for just $1 starting sometime on Sunday. I’ve heard rumors that dollar stores in the Salem, Oregon do the same thing. Unfortunately, Portland Metro dollar stores do not offer this wonderful service.
A quick word to the wise: Buy your papers early this weekend. This is the week your grocery and drug store will sell out probably by Sunday evening. The Oregonian hits newsstands by Saturday morning throughout the Portland Metro area, so I strongly suggest you buy your stash as early as possible.
I am particularly excited about this Sunday’s treasure because I am re-entering the hard-core coupon game after taking an entire year off. I am working out a new coupon organization system that will hopefully save me tons of time and stress (it just may be the perfect system, by the way) and this week’s inserts will get me started on the right foot.
Don’t worry! I will be sharing my new ideas and experiences with all of you starting in January. I simply cannot wait!
Now it’s your turn — how many papers will you be buying (or acquiring) this Sunday?
