Did you all hear about the new Fill-A-Backpack campaign that we are hosting? Fred Meyer is challenging me to take $150 and see how many school supplies I can get into five backpacks. While that sounds like a lot of money, almost half was earmarked for the actual backpacks.
The backpacks are on sale for $12.99 this week ($64.95 total).
Here’s what I was able to get for $91 this week in one transaction (I purchased the maximum I could of each item):
I limited myself to buying just specific Price Blaster items, which was tough because there were some pretty sweet deals otherwise. I’m hoping that other items go on Price Blaster in the next two weeks, like pencil boxes, markers and measuring tools (hint, hint, Freddies).
Okay, I broke the rules with the kids scissors. The two pack is just $1 and I could not help myself. The children need scissors, right?
I’m planning to break the packages of socks up and putting a few pairs in each backpack.

$.75 per pair after coupon
*You can get a coupon at customer service or the apparel register.
If you’re shopping the Price Blaster items this week, be sure to grab a “Spend $20 on school supplies, Save 20%” gold hangtag coupon as well (they are all over the school supply aisles). It’s a Fred Meyer coupon, can be stacked with manufacturer’s coupons and will help you save on the school supply items that rarely go on a hot sale. I’m thinking fancy binders, art supplies and calculators. The coupons exclude Price Blaster items and expire August 6.
Now, on to the giveaway!
Because I so believe in what Fred Meyer is doing to serve children and teachers in our community, Frugal Living NW is going to match Fred Meyer’s $150 contribution to the Salvation Army, but there’s a twist.
We are giving six readers a $25 Fred Meyer gift card to fill a backpack to donate to their local’s Fred Meyer’s school supply drive. The only thing we request is that the winners truly use the gift card to buy items to donate and that they snap a picture of their donations and of them dropping the donation off at their local Fred Meyer store for FLNW posting purposes.
To enter this giveaway, just leave a comment with your general location (for instance, “I live in Salem!”). You are required to live in a community with a Fred Meyer store.
Comments will close and six winners randomly selected at Noon on Friday, August 5.
