Welcome to our series, Food Cart Friday, where we explore a new food cart in and around Portland! Find more food cart reviews here.
Today’s review is from Dave, husband of our contributor, Kate, and connoisseur of all things delicious, from a cart, and cheap.
Steaks Fifth Avenue
5th Avenue between Stark and Oak in Downtown Portland
In this week’s review I head downtown to the carts on SW 5th between Stark & Oak to visit “Steaks Fifth Avenue” and try what has been deemed “Portland’s Best Cheesesteak” by Willamette Weekly.
First, if you are planning on trying their signature cheesesteak, you will want to make sure you are hungry, since the portions are fairly large. I suggest skipping breakfast, and riding your bike there from Gresham.
Second, order at least a medium. It is evidently a requirement for the locals to make fun of you if you order a small. My manhood was called into question, and I figured out why. When for only a dollar more (the small is $5.50 vs. the medium which is $6.50), you get a gargantuan cheesesteak that can serve as a meal for two, or a meal for one and a temporary doorstop. I haven’t even mentioned the large, which should be able to feed an entire pre-adolescent boys’ choir.
Last, but most importantly, be prepared to have your taste buds pummeled with flavor. If cows had their way, this is how they would want to end up: tender, juicy, and delicious. The steak almost melts in your mouth. I didn’t even need to add condiments, being that the sandwich itself provided the perfect mix of steak, cheese, peppers, and spices.
Steaks Fifth Avenue highlights:
:: The prices are right
:: The cheesesteaks are large and in charge (not mention they make great burgers too)
:: The taste is off the charts AWESOME!!!
Steaks Fifth Avenue has two locations: SW 5th between Stark and Oak and Pioneer Courthouse Square in Downtown Portland.
