Welcome to the first post in our new series, Food Cart Friday, where we explore a new food cart in and around Portland! I’m beyond thrilled that we are kicking off this series with a guest post from Amy Burglehaus from EatingMyWayThruPortland! Find more food cart reviews here.
The Grilled Cheese Grill
NE 11th & Alberta, Portland
It’s hard to pass by this food cart and not notice it. The one on Alberta is a school bus and the one on SE Ankeny is a double decker bus and you get to sit in them to eat. Seriously, how cool is that?
I just love food carts and here’s why: They specialize in one thing and they do that one thing well, and they do that one thing creatively. It could be anything. Donuts, ice cream, cheese plates, Fiji food, food from Guam, hamburgers, waffles, potatoes and even grilled cheese sandwiches. That’s just touching the tip of the iceberg with what Portland has to offer.
You can be sure that the ingredients are fresh. Food carts tend to support the local economy. You won’t get fast food cheap prices, but you will get quality food with a fun experience for a fraction of the price of a restaurant.
On this day, I chose to try Grilled Cheese Grill. The menu includes everything from a plain grilled cheese sandwich to sweet grilled cheese sandwiches to Cheesus and Baby Cheesus.
The Cheesus obviously grabbed my attention. It’s two grilled cheese sandwiches used as buns to sandwich a burger. That sound like a lot so I ordered the Baby Cheesus. Not only did I order it, but I made sure I said it over and over and cracked myself up the whole time. Baby Cheesus.
The Baby Cheesus was a smaller burger and very tasty. It was topped with two cheeses and all the other typical burger toppings and came with chips. It was rather filling and quite tasty at just $6.50.
Want something a little different? Try the Pear and Brie on Cinnamon Swirl Bread. My friend had this one and she said it was really good.
Kids meals are right around $4.50. They also have breakfast sandwiches which I thought looked great. You might also be wondering if they serve tomato soup? They do and it’s made from scratch. Super flavorful with chunks of goodness.
The Grilled Cheese Grill highlights:
:: Atmosphere is fun and creative with a school bus decked out with fun a fun painted ceiling and pics of people from grade school.
:: Great pricing.
:: Service was good. They were helpful and kind.
:: They do have some drinks that you can buy, but they also have free water.
The Grilled Cheese Grill has 3 locations in Portland: NE Portland (Alberta), SE Portland (Ankeny) and Downtown Portland (Alder Pod). Dining is inside the bus at the Alberta and Ankeny locations.
