Portland Parks & Rec is offering free swimming lessons at all neighborhood pools June 22-26. This is a special one-week session (lessons are every day at the same time). Registration is offered in-person only this Saturday, 8-11:30 am at your neighborhood pool. Some groups are not offered — I think the higher skilled ones.
My friend RuthAnn & I did this a couple of years ago with our girls and had a great time. We went to the Mt. Scott pool on registration day around 7:45 am and there was already a huge line. We were registered within two hours and got a great time slot together.
One thing to know is that during the free week, there are tons of lessons going on at the same time. Class sizes are really small and everything was completely safe, just a little crowded.
I highly suggest the Saturday morning spent in line if you are short on money this summer but want your kids in lessons or if you want to try them out before you register your kids for a full two weeks.
Find out more information at the Parks & Rec site (bottom of p. 2). It goes to the East Portland Pool site, but the info works for all Portland Parks & Rec pools. Search for your nearest pool by going to the Portland Parks & Rec site and searching for either indoor or outdoor pools.
