We love eating out. I mean, love it. For me, it’s mostly about not cooking. Now that our family is five and a half eaters strong (I count as one and a half), it’s difficult to not break the bank while dining out. I’ve discovered a great way for our family to eat out for less than $20, including tip!
Wednesday is Kid’s Night at our neighborhood Applebee’s (I think most Applebee’s in the Portland Metro area have Kid’s Night too). Kids eat off the kid’s menu for just $.99. Meals include a side item and a drink.
This in itself is a great deal. To make it even more economical, we always go during Happy Hour (3-6 pm) when most appetizers are half off with the purchase of a beverage. Happy Hour specials are good in the restaurant as well as in the bar. In the past, my husband and I have ordered sodas at $2.39 each, but my husband found an even cheaper option — bottled water for just $.99. Here’s how our bill usually breaks down:
2 Appetizers discounted to half off = usually $9
3 kid’s meals = $2.97
2 bottled waters = $1.98
Tip = $5 – $6
Total = $20 ish
You’re supposed to tip before any discounts, so I calculate it based on around $30 ($8 per appetizer, $4 per kid meal, $2 waters = $30).
As a side note, we are not big soda drinkers and I detest paying the inflated price in restaurants. I sometimes ask a really cool server if I can skip the drink, still get the half priced app and leave a bigger tip. They usually go for it.
There is also free face painting at our Applebee’s on Kid’s Night.
