Grilled Salmon with Spicy Teriyaki Sauce
Ok, I know “frugal” and “fish” don’t usually go hand in hand. Unless of course, you’re talking fish sticks. But let’s be honest, who really wants to talk about fish sticks? In my opinion, the word fish was never intended to be used as an adjective for stick.
Anyway, back to real fish. I think a great benefit of living the frugal lifestyle most of the time is that it allows you to splurge some of the time. And really appreciate it. Enter fish. It is generally not cheap, but it’s fun to throw in the menu every now and then when you have a special occasion and some wiggle room in the budget.
I’ll be the first to admit, I am an amateur with a capital A when it comes to cooking fish. However, my husband loves eating fish so I am trying to slowly build up my skills in this department. This recipe comes from my husband’s buddy that has you grill it outside on the BBQ. Brilliant! That way the fish smell stays where you cook it: outside. This method is easily my favorite way to prepare fish. And this sauce is so incredibly delicious.

Both New Seasons and Fred Meyer have wild Alaskan salmon on sale for $9.99/lb. this week. Haggen has wild, fresh sockeye salmon for $5.99/lb. New Seasons is also running a 3-day sale on whole salmon for $7.99/lb, which they will cut and wrap. Since you are paying for the whole fish, though, I don’t see this as a better deal. Correct me if I’m wrong.
So, remember, the frugal life is not a boring-fish-stick life. It is a challenging adventure, saving where you can so you can spend where you want. Now fire up the grill and throw some fish on it!
Grilled Salmon with Spicy Terriyaki Sauce
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 – 1 t. cayenne pepper
1 T. terriyaki sauce
1 T. lemon juice
2 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 t. garlic powder
2 lb. salmon fillet
- Combine all the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer for 3-4 minutes.
- Place fish on a large piece of foil on the BBQ grill. It helps if you roll up the foil slightly on all 4 sides to keep the juices from running off. This could also be placed on a rimmed baking sheet and baked in an oven at 350.
- Generously brush the sauce over the salmon as it cooks, repeating every 4 minutes.
- Depending on the thickness of the salmon, grill it for a total of 12-20 minutes (until it is firm to the touch and flakes easily with a fork).
Amazon carries a set of 6 Cedar Grill Planks for less than $15. I would love to try these someday to add flavor when grilling salmon. In reading the reviews, it sounds like they are good for more than one use, which makes for an even better deal!
