It’s consignment event season! I love consignment events for both purchasing inexpensive clothes for my kids and making some money on the clothes and accessories we don’t need. I have sold at two different events in the Portland area and have found events to be the most profitable way of getting rid of our old stuff.
Selling at consignment events are great for a number of reasons:
:: You get maximum exposure. Garage sales are easy because you never have to leave your house, but you also get a limited amount of people. What if it rains? What if you fail to advertise well? Consignment event organizers work hard to get people in the door. You would never get the amount of people looking for exactly what you’re selling at a garage sale as with events.
:: They are over quickly. The money doesn’t trickle in like consignment stores (which pay you when an item sells). You put in tons of work leading up to the sale, but then you are finished. And you don’t have to work during the sale.
:: You make pretty good money, at least double what you could make at a garage sale. At the last consignment event, I netted almost $200. I estimate I put in about 10 hours of prep and travel time — getting the clothes ready, tagging, driving time and time to drop off and pick up my items. Not a great hourly wage, but it is nice to make some money on items that are cluttering my home and would be given away if I didn’t sell them. And that $200 purchased clothes and shoes for my three kids for the winter.
The first thing you should do if you are interested in selling at an event is to purchase a tagging gun off ebay. You can use a hole punch and safety pins. I did that once and it was THE BIGGEST PAIN! Seriously, just buy the tagging gun. They are between $8-12 on ebay and include the barbs. Most guns ship from Hong Kong, so buy well ahead of your sale. You will thank me later. Search “tagging gun” and then click the “buy it now” tab. Choose the least expensive option with a reputable seller.
One of the best parts of consigning is that you get to shop at the pre-sale and get the first pick of all the clothes and other stuff. Go here for a list of upcoming local consignment events!
