Amazon: How to save 50% or more on diapers every month

by Angela Davis on January 21, 2011

Many of you are new to Frugal Living NW and haven’t been following how we’ve all been scoring on diapers at Amazon for the last couple of months. Here’s how you can get 50% off your favorite brand of diapers:

First, you need to get your hands on an Amazon diaper coupon. These coupons have been showing up in several different parenting-type magazines and gets you 20% off one package/box of diapers. It looks like this (the color varies from month to month and from magazine to magazine):

Some people have been able to find a $10 off $10 Amazon diaper purchase as well. It looks like this:

Here are the magazines that these coupons have been found in over the past three or four months:

  • Parenting: Early Years
  • Parents
  • BabyTalk
  • Fit Pregnancy
  • American Baby
  • Mothering (Thanks, Amy!)

I suggest you start by trying to get these coupons for free in waiting rooms (doctor’s offices, hair salons, etc), your public library and coffee shops. I found two coupons in the salon while getting my hair done last Friday.

If you can’t find one for free and you want the coupon right now, you’ll have to move to the store and actually buy a magazine. Walmart & WinCo offer percentage discounts on magazine purchases, so I suggest you start there. I haven’t had much luck finding these particular magazines at Walmart, though. Your best bet is going to be Borders and Barnes & Noble where they have an extensive selection of magazines. I’ve also had luck at Fred Meyer.

Be careful to weigh the cost of buying the magazine against the discount you’ll receive. On average, the 20% off coupon will get you a discount of around $6.30.

I know this goes without saying for most of us, but tearing the codes out of magazines for sale in the store or writing the code down and leaving the paper in the magazine IS STEALING.

Perhaps the best way to ensure that you receive coupons in upcoming months is to subscribe to one or more of the magazines. Luckily for us, there are a handful of great deals available right now:

:: Get a FREE one-year subscription to BabyTalk by registering here (scroll down, click the BabyTalk box and then fill out the form at the bottom)

:: Get a FREE subscription to American Baby by registering here (your baby’s birth date must be within one year from the date of registration)

:: Get a one-year subscription to Parents for $1 here

:: Stop by Babies ‘ R Us — they usually have American Baby and/or BabyTalk available for free at the registry table (Thanks, Wakisha!)

I’m not able to find a good subscription deal to Fit Pregnancy or Parenting: Early Years right now. There was a fantastic deal on Parenting: Early Years a couple of weeks ago, so I imagine Tanga will come through again very soon. Just be ready to jump on any deal I post.

You could also use one of the recent daily deal site magazine subscription deals to get one of these subscriptions at a steep discount. For instance, DealPulp offered a $20 voucher for magazine subscriptions to DiscountMags.com for $3 on Thursday. Parenting: Early Years is priced at $9.97 and Fit Pregnancy for $14.97. For about $8 ($3 to DealPulp and $5 to DiscountMags.com), you could have these two magazines covered for the year.

IMPORTANT: Each month’s coupons are coded so that each Amazon account will accept only one. So if you have 2 codes released in a January magazine, your Amazon account will only allow you to use one. You’ll have to redeem the other in your spouse’s or mom’s account.

Second, you’ll want to make sure you’re a member of Amazon Mom, which gives you a 30% discount when you sign up for the Subscribe & Save option + FREE two-day shipping on select baby products, including every type of diaper under the sun.

Here’s how the deal pencils out when you combine the 20% off Amazon diaper code and the Amazon Mom 30% off option:

Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers, Size 3 (156 ct) currently priced at $31.91
Save 15% as a member of Amazon Mom + 15% for choosing the Subscribe & Save option (-$9.58)
Save 20% with the magazine coupon code (-$6.39)
Pay $15.96 = 10.2 cents per size 3 diaper

This is less than $4 per jumbo pack — definitely a stock-up price! Cheaper than Huggies at Costco and even Target brand diapers!

Make sure the diapers you are purchasing has the “Subscribe & Save” box on the side (right under the “Add to Cart” box) and has the Amazon Mom explanation box that looks like this:

In my experience, a baby/toddler goes through one jumbo packs of diapers a week. If you are able to score one discount code a month and purchase a box with the equivalent of 4 jumbo packs, you’ll never have to do a diaper deal in the store again!

Plus, if you use the $20 Amazon Gift Card from Thursday’s Living Social deal (this deal is no longer available), you’ll get your first month’s worth of diaper for FREE! That will buy you a bit of time to start earning Amazon Gift Cards by searching the internet with Swagbucks (that’s how I get free diapers, baby!)!

Just wanted to let you know that Subscribe & Save is no longer 30% off. It used to be 15% for Amazon Mom and 15% for Subscribe & Save, totalling 30%, but Subscribe & Save has gone down to 5%. Also, you only get free Prime shipping (the free two-day shipping) for up to a year, but you have to earn it. You get the first three months, then you earn another month for every $25 you spend in the baby store. And it doesn’t apply to Subscribe & Save items.

And I thought others would like to know that the Amazon coupons were never in every magazine. They’re only in certain ones, but I don’t know which ones.

I hope this is helpful! :)

Yes, we’re aware of the change. This post is over a year old. There are other updates in the Amazon section.

Kate September 25, 2011 at 4:12 pm

They don’t. The coupons stopped being released around February of last year.

They could restart in a couple of months. So it might not be a wash that you got the magazine.

I am confused what you guys mean by making another amazon account? Why do you need to do this? I am new to this GREAT deal and am trying to figure it all out :) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Alyssa February 16, 2011 at 9:54 pm

The $10 off coupon states “Only one coupon may be redeemed per customer”. Amazon won’t allow more than one $10 off code per account. I had 1 and bought 2 on ebay. I’m going to have to set-up a 2nd amazon account so I don’t waste my money (I used mine and my husbands accounts first). Oh well…

I found one in a Fit Pregnancy magazine at the Pediatrician’s office. It was crazy…there were 3 magazines on the table, 2 had the 20% & 1 had the $10. Seems to be completely random! I noticed the Fit Pregnancy magazines at Fred Meyer, but they wanted $5.95!! Plus, they were shrink wrapped (smart on their part since some of the Parenting: The Early Years magazines had the coupons RIPPED out of them!). It would be hard to tell which ones had the $10 & which ones didn’t.

I am all ready signed up with amazon mom and subscribe and save for my diapers. I have my next shipment coming on the 1st, how do I apply the coupon code… I realized I had two of these coupons! And I wanted to add one to this next shipment but I can’t figure out where to add coupon codes. Do I need to wait til they are going to charge me?

Donna January 26, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Cancel your subscription and then resubscribe. You will still get the 30% off and can apply your 20% off.

I’m new to this awesome deal and have the same question about Subscribe & Save. So does everyone out there just cancel their S & S every time, then re-sign up whenever they have a coupon? Does Amazon really allow you todo that…?

Reply

Jessica March 1, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Yes, this is what I do. It has worked so far, about 6 times. I wish you could just put in a coupon when you reorder on a subscription, but it doesnt give that option.

Reply

Caralee March 1, 2011 at 10:44 pm

Same here, I have had to cancel and re-subscribe each and every time. Just remember to cancel if you are not interested in having them sent to you without ordering. I need to use coupons so I do NOT forget!!

Heidi Hiller January 25, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Don’t forget to mention that there is a coupon section as well that will SOMETIMES have $1.50 off coupon right on the site to “clip”. I just did it yesterday with my order of diapers.

Does anyone know besides Fit Pregnancy magazine where the $10 off Amazon Mom coupon can be found this month? I bought it yesterday with my 10% discount at B&N but it still cost me $5.36. Thank heaven for Gma’s gift cards to B&N. I hate to spend that much on a magazine plus I’m not going to read it.

But I did score my size 5 Huggies diapers 120ct for $6.16 and I used my Living Social Amazon credit for that amount!

Reply

Brit January 22, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Is there a way to be notifed when the Amazon diapers are cheaper, particularly size 5? Or just check back periodically. After just checking the best deals on diapers are still .20-.27 per diaper, there have been wayyy better deals in the past.

Reply

elisabeth January 22, 2011 at 11:14 pm

I just purchased 156 Pampers Dry Max size 5 diapers at Amazon for $19.49 total before tax ($21.09 after tax). Got discount from the subscribe and safe 30% off, amazon coupon 20% off from Parents magazine, and $1.50 off Pampers Coupon from amazon.com website. 13 cents/diaper is a great deal, I might say. :)

Reply

Brit January 23, 2011 at 7:03 pm

ohhh, that is! I’ll have to check it out..

Your timing is perfect!! I just ordered the Huggies wipes deal that was posted earlier this week. As of last night, these were still priced below Kirkland Brand from Costco. I used my livingsocial deal to pay for them. However, I was looking at the diapers and it didn’t seem so great. I just couldn’t remember what the price per diaper was for Huggies at CostCo so I bailed. Could you add the cost per diaper at CostCo to this post? I know thats what you base the diaper deals on. And then we’ll always have a reference…Thank You!!

Does somebody have an extra code? We really need diapers and I hate paying full price… Thank you in advance. Mymirela@yahoo.com

I *think* it does — try searching the ones you are looking for. Qualifying diapers have the Amazon Mom logo & 30% off listed.

It does most of the time if they are sold and shipped by Amazon.
