Ebates: Earn cash back on your internet purchases

by Angela Davis on December 15, 2008

I’ve been reading about Ebates all over the place. And honestly, I believe all hype, but I just never think of myself as an “internet shopper.” So I ignore the posts on other sites and move on.

I am now a changed woman. Last week, I had to order shoes for the sports team that I coach. I remembered Ebates. I first logged on to my Ebates account, clicked on Eastbay, and completed the transaction. Here’s the fun part: I earned $27! Can you believe it?

Ebates is simply a kind of a front door for 1000′s of online stores, including Walmart, Target, Groupon and ebay (coupon purchases!)! You just walk in and start shopping. The participating stores give Ebates a commission which they share with you. Here’s how it works:

Say you want to buy an Entertainment Book. You could go directly to Entertainment.com and purchase a 2011 book for $15 with free shipping. But a savvy online shopper would go to Ebates first. Why? Because Ebates will give you 17.5% of your entire Entertainment.com purchase back in cash!

:: First, create an Ebates account. You will receive an additional $5 cash back for creating your account through this link (you will not receive the $5 if you go directly to Ebates.com). Just enter your email and create a password:

:: Second, search for the site you want to shop at in the search box:

:: Third, click the orange “Shop Now” button:

Ebates will automatically take you to Entertainment.com and 17.5% of your purchase will be credited to your Ebates account!

Now, on to the specifics:

When will your cash back post to your Ebates account? Usually within 48 hours, but it could take up to 30 days, depending on the merchant. My Groupon purchases are credited within one day.

When will you get paid? Ebates pays out every three months and you will be paid once your account reaches $5.01. Bonus Rewards do not count toward this minimum (including your sign-up and tell-a-friend bonuses). If you don’t reach the $5.01, your balance will carry over to the next pay period. You can get paid by a check or PayPal, your choice.

Head to Ebates and sign up to start your savings!

I got my first check back earlier than expected. You do, however, have to make sure you have given them your address so they can mail it. I happen to login and check that. To create an account, you just have to give email.

CC: Did you complete a transaction through ebates within 30 days of signing up? That’s what happened to me the first time I signed up. I didn’t actually buy anything, so I didn’t get the $5.

I did get it this time when I bought the shoes.

I signed up last spring and NEVER received my cash back. Never. I was so ticked.
