The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the hit Broadway musical, is coming to Portland Center Stage May 25-June 27. Here’s a bit about the play:
Six kids face off in the battle of their lives. The competition is intense. The words are outrageous. Let the spelling (and the singing) begin! Three adults adjudicate the proceedings: a nostalgic former spelling bee winner, a mildly insane Vice Principal and The Official Comfort Counselor completing his community service to the State of New York. Both tender and sardonic, this hilarious Tony Award-winning musical of overachievers’ angst brings you inside the spelling championship to end them all.
My mother-in-law and I saw this play on Broadway in New York City a few years ago and thought it was quite funny. The Portland Center Stage folks state that this play is suitable for children ages 10 and up, but I think some of you would object to some of the humor (ranging from crass to moderately s*xual, though nothing different than prime-time TV), especially for your kids.
If you’re looking for a deal on date-night, they are offering $20 rush tickets starting about 10 minutes prior to every performance, which is a substantial discount off regular price.
In addition to the rush tickets, they are offering a fun option for those who order tickets by phone or in person. You have the option to “Spell and Save.” You choose a category (A, B, C). The box office will give you a word from that category. If you spell it correctly, you get a special discount off the adult ticket price for the performance of your choice:
:: Category A: $10 off each adult ticket
:: Category B: 2 for 1 tickets
:: Category C: An advance $20 rush seat (you pay the $20 for the ticket, but don’t have to stand in line)
