If you are looking for an inexpensive way to eat out, you should really give Restaurants.com a try. It’s a great opportunity to try out local, oftentimes independently owned places for a fraction of what you would normally pay.
Here’s how it works: You buy a gift certificate through the website. With a $25 certificate, you usually have to spend $35. For instance, if I go to Eastport Izzy’s, I have to have a $35 total. I use the $25 gift certificate, which costs me $2, and I pay Izzy’s $10 + tip. My total out of pocket is $12 + tip for a $35 tab.
Here’s how you purchase your certificates:
- Go to Restaurant.com and search for restaurants in your area (click on the graphic above). In the Portland Metro area, there are about 110 restaurants from which to choose (including Oasis Pizza on Hawthorne and other trendy spots).
- Fill your “shopping cart” with gift certificates (the best deal is the $25 ones–only $2 each). There is no minimum, so you can just get one $25 certificate if you’re a bit hesitant.
- When you checkout, use the code: NAPKIN and 80% will be deducted from your total. (this code is good through Tuesday, July 28 — order by early evening to get the discount)
- Print the certificates from your computer.
I am unfamiliar with most of the restaurants, but that is part of the fun — trying new places!
Tip your server on the total before discounted amount — remember that generosity is an essential component to living frugally!
Leave a comment if you have tried any of the restaurants on the list — other readers will appreciate your opinions as they try some new places out!
