My goal each week when shopping at Rite Aid is to only purchase items I know someone will use in my house. I seem to start with good intentions of being a great donor, but in the end my home becomes full of items we do not use and items I will someday donate.
When I first started on this journey ten weeks ago, my second goal clearly stated and I repeat, “I refuse to purchase products we won’t use. At this point, I don’t even want to hassle with donating them (which is a wonderful thing to do; I simply need to keep my efforts focused on my game plan).” And then week eleven rolls around and I broke a rule.
I purchased kitty litter. I do not have a cat or any other animal for that matter. I am not even a cat person.
But next week is teacher appreciation week and I thought, “What better way to appreciate a teacher than to give her kitty litter for her cat!”
Now I must modify Rule #2 to include the possibility of donating items, but with two specific guidelines:
a. Before purchasing the item to be donated, I must have a specific person I know I will donate (or gift) them to.
b. These donated items (or gifts) must exit my house and/or car within 24 hours of purchasing; no exceptions.
In keeping with the second guideline, I did not hold on to the kitty litter for next week, but rather presented the teacher with an awesome gift of kitty litter today. You should have seen the smile on her face! You would have thought I gave her chocolate or bon bons. It was truly priceless.
