Safeway: NEW $10/$50 Coupon

Shared on February 3, 2010
This post may contain affiliate links which means I make a small commission if you make a purchase at no additional cost to you. See the disclosure policy for more information.

I’m getting ready to travel to Nashville for the Blissdom Conference, but I wanted to make sure you all noticed the $10/$50 Safeway coupon on the back page of Tuesday’s Food Day section in the Oregonian.

I will work on the Safeway and Albertsons deals tomorrow, but until then, I have a challenge for all of you: Go through the Safeway ad and comment with deals and coupon match-ups you find. This will help me compile the deals quickly and help out any eager-beavers who want to start shopping tomorrow!

I’ve never heard that at SW. At Albies they don’t double any coupon over $1.00…well, I should say that is there policy, however, I’ve ran across a cashier who seemed to follow their own policies??
this would be new to me for safeway…

My safeway said I couldn’t use the $1 off nut clusters coupon, does anyone know why? She said it was more then half of the price?

didn’t take the time to read all the comments…but did anyone else notice the money-maker on Nature Valley Nut clusters? They are on at Safeway (through tomorrow) $1.50 each/when you buy 4 or more. (these are right next to the Granola bars in breakfast or snack aisle)

Use internet coupons for $1.00/1 or past Sunday paper coupons, add 4 SW doubles= free.
But it gets better: if you’ve loaded cellfire and shortscuts to your card, it will deduct 3 x $1.00 and $.40 in mfr ecoupons making it a $3.40 money maker!! yeah!

Last time I tried to use doubles and the $10 off coupon together it did the same thing as others are saying. It bumped my amount up. The cashier said I had to choose between the doubles or the $10 of course I had her take the doubles off. This is in Medford.

I decided to do a Super Sunday Safeway shopping on this lovely Super Bowl Sunday. I went a little OCD this morning and made a spreadsheet–how much the item would be after Safeway Club savings and e-coupons (since they are hidden, I didn’t want to fight) and how much the item would be after MQ. Then I got to the store and realized I didn’t have a pen or my e-coupon print out and the store was out of many things I needed to hit the $50. I almost left since most of the items on my list were there for fun (charity)–how much could I get for how little. I stuck with it and had a lovely cashier who coupons a bit herself. GREAT. I handed over all my Safeway coupons, then my $10. She said she couldn’t take the $10 until after the MQ. I said that was not on the coupon. She read the coupon and said the wording used to be different and she would try it after ringing in all my MQs. I hated to tell her she was going to have to take back more than half my order if the $10 didn’t work, so I kept that to myself. I was lucky she took the 10 Nut Cluster coupons since she cited the 50% value coupon policy. I really didn’t want to tell her to take back half my order after that! Luckily, the $10 coupon went through. I saved 88% with a “total savings value” of $110.80. $15.59 OOP–after reading the comments, I’m glad the doubles didn’t go through–I don’t have the coupon anymore, but I don’t see the savings on the receipt. I also got a $3 catilina for Old El Paso (never did find cheap Pillsbury Sweet Rolls!).

I got a screamin deal on Nature Valley Nut Clusters and Bars. They are $1.50 when you buy in multiples of 4. I had 3 IP Nut cluster coupons for $1 off each paired iwth the ecoupons for the same. I also used an ecoupon for .40 and IP for .40 the bars. This was the first time I’ve tried the ecoups paired with a regular mfr coupon…OMG what have I been missing? I got all four items for 70 cents….A-MAZ-ING! I’ve been looking for a site that really posted the Safeway deals…I just found ya’ll and I am in love. Just slightly jealous that we don’t get doubles in the Tacoma area! Does anyone know if they plan on expanding the program? I know my family in Chehalis would really appreciate it!

I was at Safeway today and the cashier was very friendly. When I was using my coupons she wouldn’t take my IP Tortilla $1 off coupon or my Nature Valley $1 off nut clusters. She said that they wouldn’t take the coupon because it was more than half of the price of the item and I would get it free. She told me that people are copying coupons. I had a total of 4 IP coupons and 3 coupon from the paper. Is there anything I could have said for her to take my coupons? I did go to Walmart and did a price match and got 2 packages of tortillas free. Yeah price match!
    Thank you

I went last night and they were out of everything. So I not only prefaced my $10 off $50 w/ “here’s my store coupons to make sure I hit fifty before I give you my maunfactures coupons”, I also said “you are out of everything so I don’t want to hear one word about my $10 not coming off and I would appreciate rain checks for this, this, this ,this and this”. the young man was very gracious and I got $112. for $39. w/ a $4 RR back. There was alot of e-coupons I didn’t even know about! I am excited and I am sorry that some of you are having so much trouble w/ it – I know it can be such a bummer to have to struggle to get the obvious.

I was able to do it today. I had used all store coupons, and MQ’s and doubles. The checker stated that in 10yrs that he had worked there, that it was always after all coupons. He understood and appeared to agree with me on the verbage though. The store manager came, she was very nice and told teh checker to try it (my total was down to $37)..she said the computer would know if it did not meet the criterea. It worked and then I added a book of stamps that I needed and it did not put the $10 back on.

I had my total down to about $23, then as soon as the cashier entered my $2 in double coupons, the total jumped back up $10. I was very nice about it, but I did ask to speak to a manager when the cashier insisted I had used too many coupons to qualify for the $10 off. The manager said I had used so many store coupons it had made my total below $50, but he said manufacturer coupons can make it below that and the coupon would still be allowed. When I pointed out that the coupon had worked until they entered the doubles, and I asked them to just add the doubles back in because I would rather save $10 than $2, they refused, insisting it would not make a difference. I didn’t push it because my kids were getting tired and I was already saving quite a bit of money with my other coupons. The cashier was pretty mad at me, even thought I was the one who was acting nice and apologetic. I might go back before the $10 off expires and try it again when I have more manufacturer coupons with me, but I’m a little embarrassed to go for a few days after that long scene!

I went in to see if they would give me the $10 (see my story up 2 comments) because the coupon clearly states after store coupons and club card savings (nothing about mq’s). However, I was told by the customer service gal and the assistant manager that store coupons are always AFTER ALL COUPONS. She said this was Safeway’s policy. I told her it was not clearly stated anywhere, and I referenced the “super-coupon” portion of the policy that states the $10 and $10 minimums are before even your club card. She kind of ignored that. She gave me a comment card to send to corporate. She said they would listen to a customer before a manager. Hm…Get comment cards at your stores! They need a solid policy and coupons that reflect that in their details!!

The $10/$50 coupon was not allowed by my checker. She waited until she had scanned all the manufacturers coupons and then said she could not take it, so I don’t know if it would have worked had she scanned in the order I handed them to her. I had the store coupons on top then the $10 off of $50 and then my manufacturers coupons. Bummer! I should think since they are getting the money from the manufacturers that they should be allowing us to take the $10 off before manufacturers coupons. It shouldn’t matter that the money is not coming from us, but the manufacturer.

I want to give a warning about the $10/$50 coupon. Last night at Safeway the COMPUTER added my $10 back on when my manufacturer’s coupons took me to $32. I was over the $50 after store savings and super coupons. I handed them my $10/$50 and it went down to $40. 30 or something. Then as soon as my mq’s were added on, it bumped me back up $10. The cashier was really nice (a young guy) and he said, that the computer would do that if you got below the $50 after coupons. He had no control over it. A seasoned cashier behind him (and friend of mine) also said that was the case.

I know for a fact that this has not happened in the past. I go to the Dallas, OR Safeway. Have other people been able to spend less than $40 (which would mean that they accepted your mq’s after the $10)? Is this happening at other stores or to people at the Dallas store, too?

Yes that is right. I always preface it with a comment like – Here’s my store coupons so I can make sure I have the $50 before I give you my manufactures coupons. That way yor are confirming the fact that you know how it works (and they probably don’t-most of them are just overwhelmed with all of it) I feel sorry for the checkers, they don’t seem to enjoy coupons like we do!! sandiemamma,

Just trying to get this $10 off $50 thing right.
You would need a total of $50 after all Safeway club savings and Safeway coupons…then give them the $10 off $50, then hand over your manufacturer coupons? I like to be able to stand behind my deals with confidence :~).

    Thanks

Have them read right on the coupon. It says “Safeway club savings and Safeway store coupons” are not included, so you cannot use the amount that you saved on these items towards the $50. but you can use YOUR manufactures coupons and the price of the items AFTER the club savings and store coupons. Read it to them and READ IT LOUD and they will give it to you. And make sure that you are ever so kind and gracious to them even when reading it LOUD to them.

What would be most helpful to me is explaining how to use this coupon. This coupon seems to have so many restrictions that I used to use them at Albertsons (when Albertsons took competitor’s coupons). I have never used a $10 off $50 at Safeway! Does it really come down to buying nonsale items, no milk, and using manufacture’s coupons?

Oh, and you can double both of those coupons if you live in an area with doubles. The tortillas will MAKE MONEY (26 cents!!!) and the weiners would be .48 for TWO!!!! I’m using all 6 of my tortilla coupons this weekend and crossing my fingers that a new printable comes out for the tortillas in a couple of days while the ad is still going on!

I haven’t gone all the way through my ad but I did notice two things.
1- Mission Tortillas are .99 each with Safeway coupon. Pair with MF and they will be .24 each!!
#2- Alberstons has $1/2 MF coupon for Oscar Mayer weiners on the back of their ad this week. Use that coupon with the store coupon in Safeway’s ad (at Safeway) and score 2 pkgs of Oscar Meyer weiners for .98 TOTAL!!

Those are the two REALLY good one’s I saw. I’ll look for more though 🙂

Here’s what jumped out at me – Free Mission Tortillas at Safeway (stack $1/1 w/the store coupon price of .99). Also, you can get 75-80 sq. ft. Reynolds wrap for 1.99 each (stack store coupon price of 2.99 with $1/1 MQ) And, at Albertson’s, you can get the Kraft cream cheese for .75 by stacking w/the $1/4 coupon. Also, use the Fresh Express Salad coupon on pg. 16 of their “value your heart” booklet to score these for just .47 each (stack w/store coupon).
