Back when my husband and I lived in SE Portland, we used to frequent the various bargain outlet shops that line Division, Powell and Foster. We loved perusing the aisles, looking for a deal. That was BK (before kids) and we had all the time in the world.
Our favorite outlet store suddenly closed one day was replaced by a new store — Save-A-Lot. I was not impressed. Not because I actually went in the store, but because they replaced our beloved discount drug store. I’ve held a grudge ever since.
So when Save-A-Lot contacted me with the opportunity to check out their store, I reluctantly agreed to finally check it out. I was compelled, of course, by the $15 gift card they sent me and by the new manufacturer’s coupons they have on their website. Obviously free food trumped the chip on my shoulder.
Well, I am impressed. The store is super clean, laid out well and has very reasonable prices. Some highlights:
:: Fantastic produce prices. Avocados were $.25 (can you believe it?), bananas were half the price of WinCo and onions were 5 lbs for $1.
:: Meat prices were also fantastic. They carry Foster Farms chicken for way cheaper than Safeway. And there’s a good variety.
:: Lots of products that match with manufacturer’s coupons.
:: Great prices on Luvs Diapers — $6.99/jumbo pack (I think). Use a Luvs coupon and you can get a pretty good deal.
:: Generic brand that is comparable in price to generic at WinCo and Walmart.
Things to note: Selection is somewhat limited. It’s not a one-stop-shop, like WinCo, Walmart or conventional groceries. You will not find some items on your list. Locations are also somewhat limited. You’re in luck if you live in outer SE Portland/Gresham, 82nd & Foster, Milwaukie and Vancouver area. Portland Westsiders will have to drive across the river.
If you live somewhat near a Save-A-Lot, I suggest you stop by to check prices and selection. You will probably find some great deals on items your family uses regularly. And definitely use Save-A-Lot to price out fresh produce. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Save-A-Lot provided me with a gift card to experience their store and tell you about it. My review is honest and is not affected by the freebie. Promise.
