Safeway: $10 off $50 coupon scenarios

by Brittany from Frugal Living NW on November 6, 2010

I hope most of you have been scoring some great deals with this weeks $10 off coupon.  If you’ve still got it tucked away I have a few ideas for you.  Many people have complained that Safeway will not let them use manufacture coupons AFTER the Safeway coupon.  While I can’t make your cashier/manager do this, I do have a couple of tips that will hopefully increase your success.

1) Point out the fine print on the coupon.  The fine print says the total needs to be above $50 after SAFEWAY coupons.  It says nothing about manufacture coupons.  If it was really an issue, it would be on the coupon.

2) Keep your manufacture coupons discrete until after the $10 is deducted.  The total will be above $50, the $10 will come off.  Then hand them the manufacture coupons.  They have a harder time contesting it this way, especially during busy times of day.  One time a cashier told me I had “tricked” her after I did this.  Then she proceeded to scan my coupons.

3) If you are unhappy about something, you can always complain to someone higher up.  I have personally seen change when I do this.

After my husband called Corporate and spoke to them and let them know our situation. He also said to the rep that the $10/$50 coupon states before discounts. The rep said to him that manufacturer’s coupons are discounts. My husband said to the rep that actually they are free money that you get back from the manufacturer, correct? The rep said yes. It feels these cashiers feel like we are trying to pull one over on them when we are all just trying to save some money off of our groceries. I am happy to hear that they changed their policy and maybe it had to do with my husband calling and I am sure other couponers too. It is sad that sometimes it feels like it’s not worth the hassle. :(

Went into the Beaverton Murray and Allen Safeway 11/8 to purchase some goodies for Thanksgiving and in general. My husband and I made a list of things we were planning on purchasing with pricing and all prior to Manufacturer’s Coupons, Doublers and $10 OFF / $50 Coupon. After all items were scanned and our Club Card entered, my husband handed the Cashier (Janet) all of our Safeway Coupons and our 2 $10 off coupons (our purchase was over $100 and we have been informed previously from another Cashier when we went to separate the order that there was no need to do that if the total order was over $100, they can scan both coupons together). So, my husband gives her both $10 off coupons and she informs us that is not allowed. He then proceeds to tell her about our past experience with using 2 $10 off coupons. She then gets on her phone and calls the Lead Cashier (John) over. At this point, it is taking him a bit to come over and there is another customer waiting in line. Janet suspends our order to assist the other customer. John walks over and is given our suspended receipt. He pulls up our suspended order and tells us that normally you have to have two separate $50 transactions, but we can do it this one time. After him entering in the 2 $10 off coupons, my husband proceeds to him our remaining Manufacturer’s Coupons. During this time, Janet was practically babysitting John, which was a tad strange since he is the “LEAD CASHIER”. Janet says to my husband that the $10 is taken off after Manufacturer’s Coupons, so those should have been given first. John then started scanning all of our Manufacturer Coupons and our final bill rang out at $70.96. My husband thanked him profusely for helping us and he then explained that the $10 off Coupons is after all discounts and savings. My husband told him that Manufacturer’s Coupons are reimbursed and are like cash. At this point, I have a $100 bill in my hand handing to him to pay the $70.96. He then with one hand grabs my $100 bill, while at the same time with his other hand adds back in to our order a $10 Grocery Miscellanous Charge. I was at that point stunned and pulled my hand with the $100 bill away from him and looked at my husband. My husband then explained to me what he said and not wanting to argue with John. I then said to John I will be calling Corporate because you don’t tell a customer that their bill is $70.96 and then when they are handing you money add more money to their bill. At this point, I was completely furious and just ready to have them void my order and have them have a fantastic evening putting away my items. However, my husband said we can deal with it later. So, I will let you all know what occurs later this morning with Safeway, but for now, I will not be visiting my local Safeway on Allen and Murray EVER AGAIN!! I would recommend you boycott that store as well. If any of you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me directly at jeajack21@hotmail.com.

Thank you all for reading this long post.

Unfortunately, after lots of posts on Facebook and complaints to corporate over the $10/$50 coupon, they changed the wording on the coupon. It now states “calculated after deduction of Safeway Club Card Savings AND ALL OTHER DISCOUNTS AND SAVINGS”. It has always been 1 per transaction though, you just got a nice cashier last time. At Murray/Allen I always avoid that checker unless I have a straight-forward transaction, she has even given me a hard time about using 2 of the same IPs in 1 transaction, said they could be “copies” (duhhhh…. they have unique serial numbers, how are they copies?).

With that coupon, you best bet is to have everything carefully organized, then hand over all the store coupons including the $10/$50, then once they have scanned it hand over the mfr. coupons. That is the way they should ring it up anyway, and I’ve even had compliments from some cashiers for having all the coupons neatly organized…. of course YMMV. :-)

So, Safeways NEW policy basically states that “all other discounts and savings” does not include mfr. coupons, so the total should be BEFORE and Mfr. Coupons… just print off the new coupon policy and take it to the store manager and make sure to tell them to let all of their staff know about it… Might want to make an extra copy to leave with them… or print one off for each checkstand and tape it to the registers! LOL

Just did the Toy Story DVD deal w/ diapers and used the $10 off/$50, $8 DVD coupon, $7 catalina, and $3 diaper & wipes coupon! Woot!! However, I didn’t get the $5 catalina for $25 Pampers purchase. Anyone else get or not get the catalina?!! I called the catalina company, so we’ll see if I get it or not. Pretty good deal regardless!

I just found out from the cashiers at Albertson’s that they will accept the $10 off $50 coupon from Safeway. Since Safeway has started giving me grief about trying to use it with coupons, I’m going to Albies to use it now.

Really? Which one? Surprised since they stopped taking their store coupons and doubles.

Just got back from Safeway, Azumaya tofu is on sale for 1.25 each, I used $.75 off coupon from the newspaper and Safeway double for free tofu. Only two days left for this deal though. Almost didn’t get my $10 off because I didn’t read the fine print that some items like milk are excluded, but I had the manager for a cashier so she let it go through anyway.

I often use the $10 to stock up on meat that is on sale. Once I bought $90 worth of meat (non-sale price) and with the sale price and $10 coupon and I only spent $40.

I got a $10 off coupon in the mail and it says “after deduction of Safeway Club Savings and manufacturers’ coupons.” :(

Oregonian publication which comes out on Tuesdays. The 1st Tuesday of the month typically has a $10/50 Safeway coupon on the back page. This publication has the Albertsons and Safeway weekly ads, and some have Smart Source coupons.

Doesn’t the coupon in the picture say right on it “after deduction of Safeway Club savings and manufacturer coupons”?

I read mine before using it this morning, and it doesn’t have the MQ wording but it did say after all discounts, so that’s why my Safeway won’t let us use MQs after the $10 discount. :(

YRMV… Select olay cleansers are on sale $6.99 – get 8 (I got 4 scrubs and 4 scrubby cloths) and use 8 $1 MC (I used 4 from nov and 4 from oct and they are quite different looking so the checker did not question the max of 4 like coupons) Used a $10/50 and 4 doubles. $35.92 oop and will submit for $20/$50 olay rebate. Final cost $1.99 each. May be difficult to find a store with 8 products in stock.

Also, I was able to use the $10/50 before mc at Sandy and Damascus although not with out some difficulty from the cashiers. Got approval from sandy CS before shopping (bit cashier gave me grief until I pointed out that i had cleared it PRIOR to shopping and she was welcome to call over there to verify) and at Damascus I pointed out that Sandy told me it was OK but they did not have the product I needed, so they let me do it. (I purchased other items at Sandy with the $10/50)

I too have had success using the $10/$50 before manufacture coupons in Damascus. Each time I use it, I go to the customer service desk and ask if they will accept the coupon after Safeway coupons but before manufacture coupons. 99% if the time they will tell me it is okay!
