I was contacted this month by Safeway and asked to try out and review their home grocery delivery service. Not one to pass up a free deal, I accepted this offer. I was especially interested to experience the following things:
1. Would my delivery come on time and would the driver be nice?
2. Would the prices be reasonable?
3. Would the fresh food (produce, meat) be high quality?
I ordered primarily fruits, vegetables, meat and some non-perishable food I needed for our upcoming vacation — 10 ears of corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, bananas, grapes, broccoli, butter, hot dogs, peanut butter and baby food.
What I liked:
:: The service provided by my delivery driver – Safeway gives you the option of paying for a two-hour or four-hour delivery window. Since I was using a code to get free delivery, I chose the more expensive two-hour option. My driver arrived 30 minutes into the window. He brought all my groceries into the kitchen for me and made sure all my items were included. I tried to tip him, but he was not allowed to take it.
:: The selection available — It seemed like anything available in my local Safeway store was available online.
:: Quick turn-around — I completed my order in the late afternoon on Friday and my delivery arrived Saturday morning.
:: Simple ordering format — Safeway.com is fairly intuitive and user-friendly. I was able to navigate the site with no problems and modified my order several times without having to start over.
:: You don’t need to input your Safeway Club Card for Club Card savings — It would have totally annoying to dig out my Club Card in order to get the sale prices.
What I didn’t like:
:: It’s a bit more expensive than regular prices in the store — I think. The produce was a bit pricey, but hey, you can’t expect WinCo prices delivered straight to your door.
:: The produce was at the absolute peak of ripeness — You do have to give up some control when someone else is selecting your fruits and vegetables. We classified the melons I ordered as “over-ripe” the next day. You can remedy this by simply leaving specific directions during the ordering process. I could have added, “Make my watermelon a bit under-ripe.”
Obviously, this service is too expensive for me to use regularly. But, I’m cheap, I can’t do the deals with the delivery service and I have time to shop myself most of the time. But I see it’s value in a couple of circumstances:
You are strapped for time — Your kids are sick, you just had a baby, you’re expecting out-of-town guests and are making the choice between scrubbing the floors and buying groceries. Grocery delivery would be super convinent.
You are ordering “real” food — If you need to buy a bunch of produce, meat and/or dairy and would be paying full price anyway, having these items delivered could make sense if you have some room in your budget.
You absolutely hate grocery shopping — My mom was there when the delivery arrived and boy, was she impressed. She is talking like she may use the service regularly as she works full time and does not enjoy going to the store. And she’s in her fifties and has disposable income. One of the perks of being an old lady (just jokin’, Mom).

UPDATE: You can not use paper coupons on delivery orders (manufacturer’s or Safeway weekly ad coupons) but you can use all the available eCoupons (Cellfire, Shortcuts, P&G eSaver, Safeway.com), but they will not show up when you complete your order at Safeway.com. They should be listed in the order form your driver gives you.
