Safeway: Mastercard Moneymaker

by Brittany from Frugal Living NW on March 26, 2013

There is a $10 Mastercard Catalina advertised on Coupon Network right now. Here’s how it would work out:

$100 Mastercard Gift Cards on sale $105.95 (includes $5.95 activation fee)
Buy 1, Get $10 Catalina
Pay $105.95, Get $10 Catalina
$4.05 moneymaker after Catalina

Don’t forget about the Just4U offer on Visa gift cards as well:

$50 Visa Gift Cards on sale $55.95 ($5.95 activation fee)
Buy 2
Use $15/2 Just4U coupon (coupon found in the “Coupon Center” — valid until 4/2)
$48.45 after coupon

I purchased a $100 MasterCard today and paid $105.95 includin activation fee but no Catalina printed. What should I do? You can’t return Giftcard purchase. Please help.

I tried to roll one catalina to another purchase and it didn’t work. Luckily, I had asked the cashier if another catalina should print if I used the one from the first purchase, and she said ‘yes,’ so when it didn’t print, she actually sorted the issue for me because she told me wrong. But not all cashiers would!

Usually catalinas can’t be used on gift cards

The activation fee for the $50 Visa gift cards is $4.99 making each $47.49 after the Just4U coupon.

also wondering if that would work?

Is it possible to apply the catalina to a 2nd transaction and just keep rolling this?

Renee March 26, 2013 at 9:28 pm

I don’t understand how the Mastercard would be a money maker?

Renee March 26, 2013 at 9:28 pm

Never mind . . . I figured it out

Is this the extent of the match ups for Safeway this week or is there something else coming?

Make sure to ask about fees when you use these cards. I received a $25 Mastercard gift card and wanted to use it to pay for lunch. The waitress told me that i’d be charged a $10 processing fee for this type of card. She wasn’t sure if it was Mastercard that is assessing the fee or their credit card processing company, but it didn’t matter to me which it was…I whipped out my debit card and paid the bill. When I got home I got out the cardholder agreement and my magnifying glass…according to the agreeement, there shoudl be no fees other than the activation fee. I’m going to make sure and ask about fees whenever I use one of these cards!

What a pain! When I did this deal before I just used my grocery money to purchase the card and used it Safeway until in ran out. They didn’t charge me anything more that the activation fee.

Dont you have to buy 2 Visa cards? That would make it $48.45 each, right?
