Safeway: That Pesky $10/$50 coupon

I tried using the $10 off of a $50 Safeway coupon yesterday. In the words of a 17 year old — “epic fail”.  Of course I forgot to bring my printout of the Safeway coupon policy. Item 12 of the coupon policy spells out that we can use coupons AFTER the $10 coupon is deducted. I know I’m not the only one that is fed up with the difficulty and inconsistency that accompanies this coupon. I thought it might be helpful to relay what I found out today as I set out to resolve this issue.

I’ve found that Facebook is the best place to get Safeway’s attention. According to many people it elicits a response more so than other methods of communication with Safeway. In order to do this you have to “like” Safeway on Facebook. Does anyone else see the irony in “liking” them in order to complain?

On the Facebook FAQ page I found that the $10/$50 purchase coupon issue was already addressed.  Here is what it says:

I have a coupon that designates a minimum purchase requirement.  Is this before or after coupons?

The qualifying purchase is only on eligible items, excludes (stamps, alcohol, tobacco, fluid milk in California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, money orders, money transfers, licenses, bus passes etc), after all store coupons (club card discounts), not including tax or CRV(bottle deposits) in the total. Manufacturer coupons are considered tender and do not affect the total so if the total was over $50.00 not including tax and CRV (bottle deposits) than the coupon could be used.

Seriously? Why are we having such a hard time getting this enforced when it is spelled out so clearly? I wonder if those of us in the Portland Metro area would share our experience with the $10/$50 coupon with Safeway, things might just change!

So how do you complain if you have had a similar experience as I did?  The Facebook page also answers that question:

I know this is an old post, but it is still a valid complaint. I make known to the PIC’s (person In Charge) that I am there and what I’m doing, etc. I make sure one of the 4 PIC’s are working before I even attempt my shopping trip, which can include calling ahead and checking. I make several special orders, and they are all welcomed and done in a timely manner. I guess the long and short is to get to know someone who has the over-ride card AND knowledge of the policy.

Here in Ashland they did take all coupons off including MQ and my total had to be above $50 ( I just made it from $90 down to $50.42) and then got the $10/$50 and then the doubler. So $38 for $90 of food. I was happy. I used the $5/$15 frozen first. They were okay with that going before on MQ’s. I dunno, I just roll with it.

I have completely given up shopping at the Safeway in Forest Grove even though it is only 5 minutes from my house. I had too many problems with thier coupons and cashiers treating me like I was a criminal (totally not, I swear!). I drive the extra 10 minutes to visit all the nice people at Fred Meyers now. Hope you can make some headway with them but a shopping trip for me, at Safeway, would ruin my whole day. I got tired of being so frusterated!

To Jennifer who posted on March 12: Same here! Safeway is so, so close. I am however, so tired of our local Puyallup WA, Safeway attitudes towards coupons that I do our big grocery trips at Fred Meyer! They are so great there (both the Puyallup and the Sumner, Fred Meyer stores). I get so worn out having to explain their own Safeway coupon policy to them at the Safeway stores and then constantly being told it does not matter what the policy says, they can do whatever they want. So what is the point of the policy????? Oh well, I guess Safeway doesn’t really need our business.

I have some trouble with only some Safeway’s i have gone to. I don’t know about the rest of you but every time i have had a nasty checker they are always women so my number one rule shopping anywhere is go the the male checker’s line stay away from the females if you can. Following this rule i have had very little problems. My question is where did you find the $10 off fifty coupon? I did print a similar coupon and my Safeway and male checker took it but,he said it’s not theirs but they would take it .I gave the $10 off coupon before my manufacter coupons and had no problem.

I have this problem almost every time I go with my $10/50 coupon. I’ve even talked with the manager about it and he was wonderful about how it should be used, but when it comes to the checkers, it’s a fight. When I used it this past week, the woman sat and fought with me and when I kept politely saying that it was right in the coupon policy and even her manager said so, she said he was just trying to get rid of me and “push it through”. I refused to budge and she finally scanned it after a five minute argument. I felt horrible for those in line behind me, but I wasn’t going to back down. What got me, the coupon didn’t beep or refuse to go through, it was all the checker’s refusal to even scan it. Really, it’s the checkers that need to be updated and informed. Especially since couponing has gotten popular.

It’s hit or miss at my Safeway. I do, however, make sure I go through one of the young male cashiers line. I brought up extra items and separated them in a second transaction just in case I was told I didn’t have enough. Fortunately he scanned the $10 off first and then my manufacture coupons and brought my total down from $130 to $21. I just wish that every cashier did this! I hate the inconsistancy.

I was doing a tremendous couponing effort at Safeway, using my coupons, their JustForU coupons, some old e-coupons coming through, the frozen food $5 coupon, etc., and lo and behold, there mysteriously appeared the $10 off $50 coupon to boot!! What a great surprise. I never really figured out where it came from, but it showed up on my CRT, and it was just a thrill because I was doing a heckuva job already, and that was just frosting on the cake!

If I am wrong on something then ok, I can take it but if they are wrong, they should fix it. I had a supervisor ringing me up and she wouldn’t take the $10 off before coupons, so I dumped all my stuff out of my receycle bags and told her I’d go to a Safeway that knew what their policies were. She was shocked, but I felt better. So I’ve found it really depends on which store you go to. I am fortunate enough to have a few nearby, and I never big coupon shop at that Safeway!

I recently moved from Illinois to Oregon. And the store there was Dominicks. Looks just like a Safeway. Their store policy was if they made a mistake charging you for something (example: say the fruit snacks were supposed to ring up $.99 and they actually charged you $1.50. They would refund me the entire $1.50. That must not be Safeway’s policy? Anyone know?

My Safeway store is wonderful. I never have any troubles and in fact they bend over backwards to substitute an item on sale if they are out when I ask. When I notice a coupon or store additional money off didn’t come off, if I go to customer service, they give me the $ back, no problem!

When they tell me no, I say yes I can, it is $50 before manufacturers coupons. This last round I used the U-check and was able to take it off myself along with the 5$ off frozen with no questions asked. I just needed help with the doublers and coupons over $3 from manufacturers.

I don’t seem to have a problem with the $10/50 coupon, IF I go to certain cashiers which can be super irritating. What about internet coupons? My store does NOT double them? What is the policy on those?

I tried the coupon ONCE last summer when i first started Couponing. I bought things I needed (including MILK… which is a NO NO with that coupon) and it didn’t work “because of the milk” the cashier said… ok said I … not knowing any better.

I only go to Safeway for GREAT COUPONS like the $2 off Rancher Reserve beef… YES… free meat! (super cheap at least!) or for Cereal / fruit snacks and granola bars. WHY are their prices / sales / catalinas on those items so much better than Albertsons? I havent ever bought those things at Albertsons in almost a year of coupon shopping.

I had a very BAD experience with safeway in Troutdale. Almost all employees including some of the “leads” are very difficult. They said I have to use 10/50 coupon AFTER all man. coupons, which means the total amount due needs to be at least $40. I explained to them what is listed on the coupon and the coupon policy. The lady said: Sorry. That is not what we are doing. Do you want to complaint? I am the lead here! I wouldn’t accept this 10/50 coupon for you unless you got enough purchase.
And they look at me like I tried to steal something from them…. I was no angry and wanted to file a complaint. But I didn’t. Maybe I should do it now…

I think the worst thing is when the people say, I could lose my job if I do this… I say…really…because I have done it like 15 times and those people are still working here…GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
