Safeway: Yet another scenario — NEW Charmin & Bounty

by Angela on March 2, 2010

OK, I realize that I’m a bit slow when it comes to deal scenarios. This one waited to hit me as I was rocking my baby back to sleep at 4:30 am. I was so excited that I almost got on the computer instead of going back to sleep. But alas, sleep won yet again.

This is an awesome opportunity for those of you looking to create or bolster your paper product stockpile. Today is the last day to do it at Safeway, so get on it! These transactions do not require the use of paper coupons at all. I’m going to outline it as though you do not have a $10 catalina to spend on the outset. Even better if you do!

Transaction #1:

Buy Charmin (24 double rolls) = $12.99 original price
Buy Bounty (12 big rolls) = $12.99 original price
Use any paper coupons you have in your stash
Use
$3/1 Charmin eCoupon
Use $3/1 Bounty eCoupon
Use a Safeway double if you are using paper coupons
Receive $6 promo savings
Pay $13.98, Get $10 P&G Catalina

Transaction #2:

Buy same items or two of one (doesn’t matter in this transaction)
Use any paper coupons you have & a Safeway double
Use $10 catalina from transaction #1
Pay $9.98, Get $10 Catalina

You can repeat transaction #2 as long as you want.

After two transactions, you will pay $.17 per roll, which is a kind of screwy way of calculating it since you have to take the paper towels into account. Of course, these transactions will get even lower if you have home mailer coupons. I just wanted to make the scenarios as easy as possible for those of you just starting out without a big coupon stash. You can score BIG even without manufacturer’s coupons!

You should now have a more-than-healthy stockpile, purchased for way less than my base price for toilet paper ($.30/double roll).

Note: For those of you having a difficult time loading the P&G eSaver eCoupons onto your Safeway Club Card, make sure you’ve created an account and are logged in before you start entering your zip code and search for coupons. Once I’m logged in, I have no problem finding coupons and I’m using a new-ish zip code from a rural area.

My P&G coupons only come off about half the time. If a new couponer has this problem, it’s probably not you.

Anyone else having trouble loading the coupons on their cards? When I log in at P&G, I’m told there are no coupons available for me. I tried entering my usual Eugene zip code and then tried Portland and no luck.

Sally March 2, 2010 at 9:29 am

Hi Debbie, if you haven’t done so already, login to the P&G eSaver website again and go to My Profile, click on the Shopper Card tab and add your Safeway card. The same thing happened to me, but after I added my Safeway card, the coupons appeared.

Sarah March 2, 2010 at 1:37 pm

Oh thanks! The same thing was happening to me!

Oops. I figured it out, sorry

I don’t noirmally shop at Safeway, so I have a question. Do the eCoupons stay on your card & you can use them for both transactions? And if I get 2 of the same items in the second transaction, will the eCoupon come off of both items? Thanks in advance!

Reply

Angela March 2, 2010 at 11:26 am

No. Once you use it, it’s gone. If you have 2 Charmin products in your transaction, the $3 will come off only once.

Heather@BecauseMoreIsMore March 2, 2010 at 2:41 pm

I figured it out after posting. Thanks for the reply, though.

Any idea how long it takes for the eCoupons to show up? It says “validating” & when I went to Safeway a few hrs. ago, they didn’t come off the transaction, so I left & will try again later.

Also, save your receipts and you can send away for this: http://www.thankyoumom.com/coupons.jsp?utm_source=eds&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=olympicSSE2-Feb22

They will mail you$100 worth of P&G coupons if you purchase $50 worth of product (before tax and coupons) between Feb 1st and April 15th 2010

Huh, I logged in added my Safeway card and still no coupons. I logged out and tried again. No such luck :(

Elise, try this:
click my profile
click shopper cards
enter that info
click “done”
For some illogical reason, just clicking “add” will not do it. I was having the same problem you are describing until I clicked the “done”. Hope it works for you!

Kimberly March 2, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Thank you for that! I have tried loading these multiples times with no luck. I appreciate your help! After hitting done, they finally showed up. :)

How long after you load the coupons can you use them at the store? i just loaded them this moring and want to do this deal bad!!!

Reply

Go to “selected coupons” and if the status says “waiting to be redeemed” you are good to go – usually takes an hour or so.

Reply

Amber March 2, 2010 at 10:09 am

There is a $10 off $50 in the oregonian today.

Reply

Krista Motsinger March 2, 2010 at 10:44 am

Reply

Michelle March 2, 2010 at 10:25 am

There are also both bounty and charmin .25 coupons that can be doubles in the 2/7
P & G saver, don’t forget to use those for another $1 off!!!

Reply

Carrie March 2, 2010 at 10:32 am

I just want to make sure, they go off the original price? not the sale price?
I didn’t get the cat when I did the deal… and the cashier was def. not coupon friendly!

Reply

Linda March 2, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Same here – I didn’t get a catalina either and the poor cashier was so confused – he actually actually tried charging me for 3 packs – I caught it – then he removed 2 (should have only removed one) I caught it again and told him he only charged me for one and needs to charge me for one more. Then after all that – no catalina! Who knows what happened but I just left it as it. I guess you win some and you lose some. I thought about calling the catalina company but figured they’d probably tell me since it was on sale – it’s only 19.98 worth of products (not 25.00) Oh well. I am thankful for all the great deals I do get – even if some get screwed up along the way.

Krista Schroder March 2, 2010 at 11:26 am

Okay, I must ask, were you able to use your $10 off $50 before coupons or after? I am ready to go to Safeway, but I don’t know if they will let me use this great coupon before all my other coupons??

Reply

Kelley March 2, 2010 at 12:48 pm

They will let you with manufacturers coupons, but not before Safeway store coupons or doubles.

Reply

Krista March 2, 2010 at 3:17 pm

I’m just DYING! I went to Safeway and bought the stuff and the eCoupons didn’t come off. I walked away from the deal. I came home and the coupons are still being validated by the retailer!!

Dallas ladies, don’t you DARE wipe out the store! I’m going back as soon as the eCoupons are loaded!! LOL!

Reply

Kelleigh @ Kelleigh Ratzlaff Designs March 2, 2010 at 11:27 am

Okay, an update. I called P&G and they said they were aware of the problem of the eCoupons not loading. She said to try it again later, but if the eCoupons don’t come off to just call her back and she’ll add my name to the list to get the $6 back. Checks come out at the beginning of the month (so, April). I’d love it if this worked, but I’m okay with a check in the mail!!

Reply

Angela March 2, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Wow! Thanks for making the call!

Reply

Anna March 2, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Yes, Thanks! I’ll be doing that as well. My e-coupons didn’t work, but I always assume it’s my fault (it usually is! :) ).

Reply

Kelleigh @ Kelleigh Ratzlaff Designs March 2, 2010 at 2:19 pm

UPDATE: After refreshing a bajillion times, my P&G status finally changed to waiting to be redeemed. I grabbed the kiddo, jumped into the car and ran over to Safeway, only to discover that the shelf had been emptied of the Bounty! HOWEVER, we found more Bounty on top of the freezer section. SO, Dallas ladies, look on top of the freezer section above the ice cream bars!!

My deal:
One 24 pack of Charmin (reg price was $15.99 – buy 2 for $9.99)
One 12 pack of Bounty (reg price was $15.99 – buy 2 for $9.99)
- .25¢ Bounty coupon
-.25¢ Safeway Doubler
-$3.00 Charmin P&G ecoup
-$3.00 Bounty P&G ecoup
Three Trident Layers gum (on sale for $1)
- (3) .75¢/1 coupons from Sunday paper (who knows when)
- $1.50 Safeway Doubler (Overage, baby!!)
= $12.48 OOP and I earned a $10 Catalina!
So, $1.24 per BIG roll pack and 3 packs of free gum!! WAHOO!! I LOVE THIS STUFF!

this jill March 2, 2010 at 2:30 pm

I also just talked to P&G and they explained that they’re computer was down this morning. The guy I talked to said to wait until my Safeway card (on line) said the coupons are “awaiting to be redeemed” and then go back to the store with my receipt and I’ll get the savings. More work than waiting for a check, but oh well.

Yes, thanks for making the call. Where is the number? I loaded the ecoupons this morning but they would not load. I noticed tonight that the coupons are still waiting to be validated by the retailer. It was so sad too because I did my last deal tonight and the coupons didn’t come off. I had one for the iams, bounty and the tp. Bummer. The funny thing is the lady behind me did the same deal as me and walked out of the store only paying 3.99. I am not sure if she got enough to get the CAT deal but only 3.99 for just those two products alone was amazing. Bummer again! Good for her though.

Reply

tera March 2, 2010 at 11:49 am

The cat did not print for me because it was not 25 dollars after coupons

Reply

Melody March 2, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Tera – That shouldn’t be a problem. I have seen this deal on a few blogs and people are getting the catalina successfully doing just as the scenario described. Don’t know if the cashier told you that was why, sometimes cashiers or managers like to tell you that’s the reason when it is DEFINITELY not. My friend did it this morning with no problems. Maybe try a different store?

Reply

Linda March 2, 2010 at 3:17 pm

weird how that works! I did this yesterday with no problem – then tried again today – exact same store and exact same products and no catalina !?!?!?

Reply

Erin L March 2, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Has anyone used the P&G cat to buy more charmin & bounty? There is small print on mine and it says not to be used on p&g products?

Reply

Mandy March 2, 2010 at 2:09 pm

I just got off of the phone with the P&G e-coupon support line. I was told that the website was having technical difficulties, but they have been resolved. It is taking roughly 6 hours for e-coupons to be verified by the retailer and be eligible for use. Even though I loaded my e-coupons several hours before I shopped, they didn’t deduct from my purchase.

I did receive my $10 catalina just as FLNW outlined. I did notice some inconsistancies between the deal above (stated $12.99 each), the price tag on my store shelf (stated $13.99 each), and the prices on my receipt (stated $15.99 less $6 card savings each = $9.99 each).

After my e-coupons are available, I’ll try rolling the cat to see what happens. I’ll report back.

Jamie March 2, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I’m excited for my ecoupons to go through!

I went to Safeway today to get some Freschetta pizza (we love this stuff in our house). Here’s the deal. . .
4 Freschetta Pizza’s – $19.98
1 El Monterey Taquitos – $5.99
Total – $25.95

Use 4 $1/1 pizza coupons (from coupons.com and the Freschetta web site)
Use 1 $1/1 Taquitos (don’t know what insert it is from)
Use doubles
Total coupons – $7

OOP $18.95
Get back $10 cat
=$8.95 for all!

Dawn March 2, 2010 at 2:18 pm

I have ran into the same problem everyone else is. My coupons still say verifying at store. When I called he said they are aware but it could take a while. I already went to Safeway and did the deal then noticed. I am going to take back and have them re-ring the sale and hopefully run the deal again.

I’m so annoyed… I went into Safeway and my infant started screaming as we walked it. So I was going to “quickly” do a deal, leave and go back later when dh got home. So I did 1 ea Bounty and 1 ea Tide, then 1 ea Charmin and 1 ea Tide – First, my ecoupons did not come off. Second, I did not get a CAT. The cashier said it’s because the price comes down to 9.99 and I said no, other people are getting CATs and because the original price is $12.99 + $13.99. But with a screaming infant, I just left… I think I’m going to go back later and take everything back, but that irritates me because now I lost my high value coupons. :(

Melissa March 2, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Krista-did you have any trouble using the $10 off? Did you make other purchases, besides the $25 freezer food and the $25 P & G (because technically that only allows for $9.99 x 2 = $19.98)? I am just learning these things and would like to go get more of both items. Where you able to use the $10 cat on that purchase that came from an earlier p & g purchase, because in the fine print it says not for p & g purchase? I have a $10 freezer coupon and the $10 cat from p & g purchase I made this morning. Wondering if you used both in your purchase with the $10 off $50? Thanks for the help!!

Krista March 2, 2010 at 7:09 pm

did this deal twice today…the first time all I bought was freezer and pg stuff. Worked great. Gave them my spend 50 save 10 coupon first then my others. Had NO PROBLEM both times!!! Good luck

Krista March 2, 2010 at 7:10 pm

oppss and YES I used my two 10 dollar off catalian coupons from earlier this week as well. One pg catalina and one freezer catalina….and then my new catalinas printed perfectly!!

Reply

Melissa Mason March 2, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Thanks Krista! I just got back and it WORKED!! I was so excited!! Got my two new catalinas. I did have to add a couple small items to get up to the $50 since the charmin was $9.99 and my freezer stuff was just under $28. Made it to $50.93!! ended up spending $5.96 out of pocket and recieved two more $10 cats!!! The cashier was wonderful and was so excited for me too!

Catherine March 3, 2010 at 12:08 am

Great job Melissa M! I wish I had noticed the 10 off 50 coupon started today. I could have used it twice today! Oh well. I will wait till the weekend or at night when my all time favorite cashier is working! Mary F at the Safeway on 76th street in Vancouver is the BEST!!!

Krista Motsinger March 3, 2010 at 9:54 am

awesome ladies! WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Krista Motsinger March 3, 2010 at 9:55 am

sorry u didn’t notice it Catherine…I posted it on several sites at about 11am yesterday in hopes that some of the Blog Sites would post it! Oh well! :)

Ann March 2, 2010 at 6:58 pm

My ecoupons also didn’t come off, and when I checked after getting home, it does say they are still being verified (at 7pm, even though I loaded them around 1:30 this afternoon). I will call P&G tomorrow and see if they can send me a check – it sounds like from what some of you are saying, they will do that, assuming I have my receipt?

I just got back from the SE 122nd and Powell Safeway. I was able to roll the catalina from my first Bounty/Charmin trip and my e-coupons worked. I paid $3.48 out of pocket and received a $10 catalina.

The shelves were empty, but I asked and they had additional stock in the back. If you live near that store there is still time to go and they still have stock on hand. Catalinas printing are pretty reliable there!

Did the $10 off the $50 and got $20 back in Cat! The only bad thing was the cashier wouldn’t let me use the freezer one on a second transaction of freezer stuff. She said it had to be used on another shopping trip. This was after she scanned my s.w. card–taking off all my frozen food e-coupons. Boo!! But I am happy about my $20 cat!

Ruth March 3, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Same problems here with the P&G e-coupons not coming off on the receipt. I was so sad! I wouldnt’ have purchased the Bounty and Charmin otherwise, even tho it came out to about $5/ea. I just make do without papertowels all together, and we get free half-rolls of TP from my husband’s work. :) Does anyone know if we call that number above will we just be able to receive a check in the mail, or what? My schedule doesn’t allow for a return trip back to Safeway! Anyone?

Is the P&G Charmin/Bounty $10 Catalina still going? I keep reading that it ended on 3/2 but I’ve also read elsewhere that it goes until 3/7. Would like to know before I head to Safeway. Thanks
