Back-to-School Deals for July 11-17

by Angela on July 12, 2010

Each week I will compile the best back-to-school deals at local stores. The school supply deals will run through the first week or so in August, so pace yourself and keep all your receipts in case you find a better deal later.  Be sure to check out Money 4 This, Not 4 That’s post on how to get the best prices on school supplies as you prepare to save big this summer.

In addition to what your child needs for school, think about other reasons to take advantage of these amazing deals:

  • Christmas stocking stuffers
  • arts & crafts supplies for your preschoolers
  • Operation Christmas Child boxes
  • school supply drives for your neighborhood school
  • opportunities to send supplies to military in Iraq and Afghanistan to give to children they encounter
  • your family and/or small businesses needs throughout the year

It’s important to note that stores offers these loss-leader sales because they want you to buy other items at full price while you’re in the store. Be careful to not impulsively buy something and negate your savings.

I ran in to Walmart on SE 82nd to pickup something at the last minute and found Crayola 24ct crayons for $.25 each! They had some other great deals but I didn’t have time to really look around. When I was checking out the cashier commented on how great a price that was and that normally they aren’t that cheap until a week or two before school starts!

Excited about the Office Depot deals!

Just a heads up on deals related to the more generic pens and pencils like Rose Art. The pencils don’t sharpen well. The color can sometimes be horrible. If you have artist children do them a favor and spring for the more expensive brands.

I went into my local Walgreens (Albany) and they had the Penway pencils on an unadvertised sale for a box of 10 it was .19 and I bought ten with no problem!

I do agree with you Mary on the roseart stuff! I always stick with Crayola. It just can’t be beat in terms of quality.

As both a teacher and mom of some art freaks, I can soundly attest that the quality of the Crayola products far surpasses the Rose Art and other off brands. Yes, there really IS a difference!

YMMV, but the Cascade pkwy staples honored my competitors coupon from Home Depot, so I was able to get the rebate items + plus a few others and use the 10/25. Yay!

i was a tad confused on the Home Depot reference but obviously you mean the Office Depot coupon?

i’ve had success using a competitors coupon at staples and was thinking of doing that this week with the deals.

If you are a teacher or a homeschooling teacher, the staples limits are much higher. . .I was able to get 25 pencils, 1 cent each, and the same for the folders! You can get a teacher rewards card to replace the regular staples rewards card.

I was at Target in Hillsboro yesterday and they also had PaperMate pens for $.50 for a ten pack.

Even though I homeschool, I love back to school shopping! I think my favorite for the first weekend of shopping was the $.20 two pack of glue sticks at Target. If lapbooking is something you do for homeschool, what a deal!
