Trader Joe’s: Organic Coconut Oil $5.99

by Kate from Frugal Living NW on January 4, 2012

Look what I found at Trader Joe’s the other day — Organic, virgin, coconut oil for just $5.99 for 16 oz glass jar. I was so excited about this because Amazon deals have been pricey this last year (it is currently $6.75 for Subscribe & Save if you don’t live near a Trader Joe’s which is the best it’s been in a few months). It was found near the baking section on an end cap. Let’s hope they keep it around for a while.

I love using this in my baked goods, treats and breads, but I’m not a big fan of it in my savory dishes. It might go well cooking chicken for a Thai dish. Does anyone have any good savory, dinner dishes they like to use coconut oil in?

Yup–I found this product a couple of weeks ago (and I’m sorry that I forgot to post it to the FLNW Facebook page, which I had intended to do). GREAT price, and it tastes great too.

we use it for more than baking… hair oil, deoderant, toothpaste, it is antimicrobial so I use it in sore areas on my baby’s fat folds LOL , diaper rash ointment etc. WE also put it in smoothies.
I do use it with my halang-halang chicken. Coconut chicken. but not really anything else savory. I like to use the non-virgin for savory dishes.

I haven’t used it before. Do you just substitute it for veg. oil in recipes?

Reply

Iris January 4, 2012 at 6:17 pm

What we do is melt a bit, and substitute it partially for vegetable/canola oil in baking. It has such a strong taste (but a really good one), as well as being quite expensive, that we really don’t need to use more coconut oil than about a quarter of the total oil volume. But that’s just us. I am sure opinion varies here.

I saw it at TJ last night myself and got excited, because the same size jar goes for $10-12 at the supermarket.

Coconut oil is GREAT for using to pop your popcorn. Dang! It’s delicious; you need to try it.

I know holistic health coaches who will advise using it as skin moistuizer too, straight from the bottle. Just put it directly on your skin (or in your hair as a moisturizer). I haven’t tried that yet, it sounds a little bit gross to me for some reason, but I have heard it from 3 or 4 reliable sources now.

Also, I’m told it is one of the only/best “medium chain fats” which means your body can break it down easily, but it’s also pretty healthy, relatively speaking.

Coconut oil as a moisturizer is fantastic – especially right out of the shower – I have used it on my face for years now – best moisturizer out there – also use it to wash my face – read about the OCM method (oil cleansing method).

Coconut oil is amazing for so many things – you can use it as a deodorant, you can brush your teeth with it, you can treat your hair with it, you can kill lice with it, you can shave with it – the list goes on and on – oh, and you can cook with it too! :-) Coconut oil has a higher melting point, so it is much healthier to cook with – as much as I love extra virgin olive oil, I don’t cook with it – the oil can become rancid when heated – save the olive oil for your salad dressings, and cook with coconut oil!

I totally love it on popcorn!!! I use coconut oil everyday, for everything such as frying my eggs, spreading it on toast, using it on my skin, as well as just taking some on a spoon and consume it like that…love the taste!!!

Kristen January 4, 2012 at 9:52 pm

I like to use it for pad thai. And a lot of asian dishes.

My dad’s a chiropractor & he got me some and told me this: Olive oil is healthiest when it is not heated, so like in a vinaigrette. If you are heating the oil, coconut oil is the way to go! I use it to cook my eggs in the morning (it’s a very mild coconut taste, at least to me) AND the best way to use it is to pop popcorn, like Rachel said. Oh my! Sooooo good!

Some coconut oils do not have a flavor, which I prefer. I noticed the Trader Joe’s bottle doesn’t say “cold pressed.” Is there a big difference?

Reply

Marissa January 5, 2012 at 8:00 am

Yes, it is cold pressed, but I had to call TJ’s corporate office to get the details on that. I wanted to make sure where the coconuts were from and how they were processed. So, according to them at corporate their official description says it’s cold pressed.

I forgot to mention, it was originally recommended to me by holistic health coaches as a healthful approach to gaining calories/weight for my pregnancy diet.

Coconut Oil is one of my favorite things! I found it when I was looking for something to treat my daughters eczema. Now I use it mainly for greasing pans (like instead of crisco or veg oil) and once the pan is greased, I just rub it into my hands and arms like its lotion! Its awesome!

Is the TJ’s coconut oil considered to be Pure coconut Oil?

Reply

Never mind the cooking..coconut has great anti fungal and anti viral effects. It cleared an interal yeast infection. I recently tried it just as I was feeling a scratchy throat and it helped supress the cold virus. One table spoon 3X daily

I just got the coconut oil from Trader Joe’s and I am severely disappointed. It’s really low-quality compared to other coconut oil’s I have tried. It smells and tastes really off to me, almost as If they mixed it with cheaper oil. I was excited about the low price but I guess that should have been a tell-tale sign. The best I have tried so far is Kelapo (organic, fair trade, unrefined) Extra Virgin Coconut Oil–so amazing!

Kate January 18, 2012 at 8:16 am

Thanks for the update. I think you could return it. Trader Joe’s will take back their products if you’re not satisfied. I’m a huge fan of Nutiva and I had planned on trying the Trader Joe’s when I was finally out, but now I think I’ll hold off. Thanks for the heads up.

Can you further describe the differences between the Trader Joe’s product and he Kelapo? I have only ever used Trader Joe’s. According to corporate, Trader Joe’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is made thus: Freshly harvested organic coconuts are de-husked and grated. Then, when the meat of the coconut is still fresh, it’s cold pressed and filtered to remove any remaining pieces of the fruit. That’s the process. Nothing more. http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flyer/article.asp?article_id=554

I have been buying mine from Tropical Traditions..but it costs way more. I have been using it for over 3 yrs. It is excellent for UR skin too. It helps restore collagen. If U go onto Trop. Trad’s website..they have recipes. Coconut oil has lots of healing agents. Very good 4 U.

OOPS! Just read some of the comments on TJ’s coconut oil. Like I said..I have been buying mine from Tropical Traditions..& have nothing but good things to say about it. It is more expensive..but read the article on it. They always have sales going on. So far this is the best I’ve found. Good Luck!!

My daughter (17 now) has used it for a few years every day on her face. Bad acne runs in the family and hers just disappeared. You’ll notice that people who use the horrid (and also expensive) pharmaceutical anti-biotics never have the acne clear, and often it doesn’t even improve.

So, you can spend tons of money, put toxic stuff on your body to be absorbed into your bloodstream, causing immediate and longterm side-effects, and you can continue to have that bad acne or… you can pay $6-$15 for an organic food product which wipes out acne (partially because it has anti-bacterial, as well as anti-fungal and anti-viral properties by nature) and lasts a long time per pint, plus you can cook with it and otherwise eat it, and moisturize your whole body with it.

Hmm…. now which road should I take?

cassie January 13, 2013 at 8:10 pm

Can you please tell me how she used it on her face? I am thinking about trying this out….do I wash it off? let it soak?

is it fattening to eat it by the tablespoon 3X a day?

Reply

Heather July 3, 2012 at 5:12 pm

No! It’s not fattening, just need to completely eliminate grains and PUFA’s and increase fruits in place of grains. Get rid of legumes too. Those make us fat! Saturated fats are actually good for us

Anne February 14, 2012 at 7:50 am

Coconut oil will not go rancid –it can be heated to any temp. Is this brand made with dried copra–if so then it is not good quality–there usually is a good reason to spend more if should be natural raw unrefined from fresh organically grown coconuts not dried copra.
Hope this helps!

I have not yet cooked with it. I do want to say I have been searching for Virgin Organic Coconut Oil to use as a beauty product. I have nothing to compare it to. I will never buy all over body lotions or hair treatments again! I have been using it for a week and my skin is no longer tight, dry, itchy. It looks radiant and feels amazing! I also applied it to my hair overnight (no stains on the sheets). I cleansed and styled my hair the next morning. I received so many comments about how healthy, shiny and beautiful my hair was. (I use Hair One and ditched the shampoo/conditioner bit 2 weeks ago) I am so glad TJ’s is carrying this at an excellent value! Still feeling guilty about spending years and hundreds of dollars trying to find good skin and hair care!!! :)

Love your idea of using CO to deep condition hair. Do you apply to dry hair let it soak in, then wash, or do you apply after shampooing, like w/most conditioners? How do you apply the solid oil? Does it rinse out of hair w/o shampoo?

Reply

Does anyone know if it is Non-Hydroginated?

Reply

sam vernola February 27, 2012 at 1:28 am

The lable does not specify wether or not it’s hydroginated.
If hydroginated it would not be healthy.

Reply

cureous March 4, 2012 at 6:05 pm

no, it is not hydrogenated. All it contains, per it’s label is 100% virgin coconut oil, which is what you want. If it were hydrogenated, it would not be virgin.

I love Trader Joes Coconut Oil. I have been using CO for a long time now and have tried lots of brands, Nutiva, Garden of Life, Dr. Mercola’s, etc. Trader Joe’s is just as excellent. The price is fantastic as I go through one jar a week. I use it after a shower, on my toothbrush with some baking soda, on my skin all day at work, in my hair, cook pancakes, cakes with it, mix it with a little raw butter for popcorn and frying. And I eat a tablespoon ever day for breakfast :) I haven’t had a cold, any type of flu or any pain for years. After spending the day with my little nephew who found out he had Strep the next day, I didn’t even get it. I work in a Hospital environment where germs are rampant but no sick days needed. And it gives you energy beyond belief.

I began using coconut oil about 2 wks. ago. For cooking and eating off the spoon. Too soon to tell its effects. Saw the TJ’s brand today and it was $5.99. I was shocked it was so cheap. I’m using Barlean’s and I love it. Costs twice as much, but will stick with it for now and maybe try TJ’s later!

I have used Nutivia and garden of life, Trader Joes is every bit as good, If you want to pay more, well that’s up to you!! I use it to cook but I use it as a moisturizer, hair conditioner, and tanning lotion, Yep I have a tanning bed in my home and have not bought tanning lotion for some time. This saves me 150.00 a year. My favorite thing to fry in this oil is plantains.. OMG they are the best.. If you have not tried TJ brand, you really should..

Use coconut oil as Body Oil. Apply to damp skin immediately following your shower, then follow that with your favorite body lotion. You’ll IMMEDIATELY notice the improved, softer skin that lasts. Coconut oil is fragrance free, so you won’t smell like a coconut. One 14-16 oz. jar lasts about 3-4 months (daily use). Can’t beat it!

I have terribly dry skin and someone in the beauty business told me to use coconut oil. What a miracle this stuff is!! My skin feels like silk and the smell does not linger at all. I highly recommend this product as a moisturizer.

I use it in my stir fry instead of vegetable oil. My hubby is really picky about oil and taste especially in stir fry over rice.. it is always delish and so healthy for you too!

Answer to Len: As far as I know virgin or cold pressed coconut oil is not hydrogenated which means that if it gets hot out its very soft and oil but if its cool its more like a butter that you can put on toast.. very good for you, and your body knows exactly what do to with it unlike other oils that just plain clog your arteries! Also I found this in a statement by Tropical Traditions website.. “You are unlikely to find hydrogenated coconut oil as an edible oil in the market today. It would only exist as an ingredient in tropical cultures, in such things as candy bars where they do not want the coconut oil melting. Hydrogenated coconut oil is virtually non-existent in the US market, since the FDA started requiring trans fats to be listed on labels several years ago.”

For all of you wanting more info than is supplied on the label. This is straight from Trader Joe’s own website: “To make our Organic Virgin Coconut Oil our supplier starts with freshly harvested coconuts that are de-husked and grated. Then, when the meat of the coconut is still fresh, it’s cold pressed and filtered to remove any remaining pieces of the fruit. That’s the process. Nothing more. Some coconut oil is extracted using high heat, chemicals and even bleach. Not ours. Producing the oil in this more pure, natural way, we are able to retain the nutrients, flavor characteristics and aromas of fresh coconuts.” http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flyer/article.asp?article_id=554
