I do not come from the school of thought that doing things yourself is the best option. I suppose that boots me out of the “frugal” category. My husband and I figure there are professionals for a reason — they know more than us and do a better job than us. Most of the time, they are worth every penny they charge. We’ve decided to become experts at a few things and pay experts in other fields to take care of the rest. And dealing with taxes and payroll is at the very top of our list.
Three years ago, my husband and I started a general contracting business so we could flip houses legally. We realized quickly that we needed help with payroll and other small business advice, so we did the busted out our mad research skills to find the very best person for the job. Actually, no. We searched the internet and picked the dude closest to our house. It could have been a total disaster, but finding Trent Doman, CPA has been one of the biggest blessings to happen to us in the past few years.
Up until 2007, we had been working with a company that had done Will’s family’s taxes for a very long time and we were quite pleased. Seriously, ignorance is bliss. Every spring, we just jammed an envelope full of W-2’s and receipts and waited for our returns to be mailed to us for our signatures.
Then, in 2007, the proverbial poop hit the fan and we were smacked with a very large tax bill. Seriously, it was gigantic. And it was largely due to our previous tax advisor’s lack of attention to our family. This discovery came at the same time that we decided to get someone to help with payroll.
We quickly decided it was best to transfer all our “tax stuff” to Trent’s office and see if he could straighten out our gigantic mess. And he did. It’s a long story, filled with way too much boring personal information, but we have been absolutely blown away at Trent’s service to our family. We trust him. He has given us good and wise counsel. And he has worked very hard for us.
Here’s the real fun part. We are currently getting audited by the IRS. Oh, yes. I’m serious. And the horror stories are true. It totally sucks (sorry, I know some of you think that word is crass. But it’s the most fitting word I can find). And the only way we could possibly manage this is that Trent is walking with us through it. Obviously, we’re paying him. I can’t even imagine what this one is costing us. But it is worth every single penny, because we have a professional helping us.
Trent’s website isn’t fancy. His office is in the middle of a strip mall (there is a Goodwill drop-off next door, so you can kill two birds). But, just like most things in this world, fancy does not always mean quality. Trent is an expert in helping small business owners do their businesses right. In one hour, Trent set up everything I needed to get my blogging business legit and running. Here is a list of his other services:
Individual Income Tax Preparation & Planning
Business Income Tax Preparation & Planning
Compiled & Reviewed Financial Statements
Estate & Gift Tax Preparation & Planning
Tax Examinations & Audits Assistance
Write-Up & Bookkeeping Services
QuickBooks Setup & Consulting
Small Business Consulting
Please understand that I do not often give glowing public endorsements of service providers that we encounter. And I know that there are many, many wonderfully competent CPA and tax preparers out there — in fact, you are welcome to leave your recommendation in the comments section. But if you own a small business, have more complicated tax issues, or are just looking for a CPA to take your family’s tax preparation burden off your shoulders, I enthusiastically recommend Trent Doman in Damascus, Oregon.
