U.S. Bank: FREE $75 for opening a new account

by Angela on February 22, 2010

U.S. Bank is at it again! Free money just for opening an account! The Sunnyside Albertsons branch is offering $75 to anyone opening a new checking account by Friday, February 26. It’s a super simple way to make $75 and only takes a few minutes from beginning to end. Follow these directions:

1. Go to the U.S. Bank branch inside the Sunnyside/Happy Valley Albertsons

2. Open a checking account

3. Deposit at least $75; you will immediately receive a debit card

4. Go through Albertsons and purchase at least $75 worth of groceries or gift cards using your new debit card. This must be a non-PIN purchase.

5. Immediately take your receipt(s) to the U.S. Bank counter and the teller will reimburse your account the $75 by the next business day

Don’t be worried about messing this up. The tellers at this branch are incredibly helpful and they know you are coming in just for the $75. Just tell them Frugal Living NW sent you! They will walk you through the entire process and make sure you do it correctly.

You do not have to immediately make your purchase nor do you have to do it at Albertsons. You can bring in receipts worth $75 from any store and receive the credit. Just make sure you use your new debit card in a non-PIN transaction (the cashier pushes the credit key instead of the debit key). I always suggest just doing it at the Sunnyside store so you can get it done in one trip.

This offer is open to new U.S. Bank customers only and only at the Sunnyside Albertsons branch.

EDIT: You will probably get a tax form next January describing that you received the $75 as income, so you’ll be taxed on it for 2010.

We did this last year and did get a tax notice at the end of the year as income – so beware

I just got a similar offer in the mail from Chase for $100, but when I read the fine print, I decided not to do it. If I remember correctly, it requires that you keep the account open for a certain number of months and make at least 1 transaction per month. If you don’t do these things, then they will withdraw the $100 from your account. Do you know if the US Bank offer has these kinds of restrictions?

There are no transaction requirements. You may have to keep it open for a certain period of time. Ask the teller when you open the account. If there is a requirement, it will have a really low minimum balance, like $5.

It’s true! we also received a statement saying we made $75 in interest… so I’m sure it’s not a big deal in the end… but it’s not completely free!

You may want to check with your local branch just in case more than one location is participating. I did this deal at the end of last year at the Troutdale Albertsons branch. I did receive a 1099-INT for the $75 as well. I used the $75 to help pay for my son’s braces. Every little bit helps!

Okay, I shop in the Portland metro… but I’m a geographical idiot. Where’s the Sunnyside Albertsons? thanks!

And you’re funny! It’s on 148th & Sunnyside Rd in Clackamas/Happy Valley. A few miles east of the Clackamas Town Center on Sunnyside Road.

I’m wishing I weren’t a US Bank customer already.

Do you have to be a new customer or can you just open a new account but already have accounts at US Bank?
Thanks!

I think it’s just for new customers.

I got the details! you have to keep the account open 6 months. you must have a balance of at least 1.00. if you cancel before the 6 months is up – they will charge you $30.00 and let you keep the $45.00.

WOOHOO! Thanks frugal living nw! I did this yesterday. Now where to spend my $75?? I think I’m going to Target to buy $75 target gift card (which makes the reimbursement easier at the bank). Super excited. They were VERY kind there & asking me how I heard about this, and I told them: FRUGAL LIVING NW! They were RAVING about you. They, as am I, are BIG FANS! WOOHOO!

I did it today! Yipee! The gal there asked where I’d heard about it and I said, “oh, just something on the internet” and she asked pointedly, “FrugalLivingNW?” Um… yeah! Very nice from the tellers to the manager and even the Albie’s customer service to transacted my Albie’s gift card. Thanks!!

Is this deal only at that location or all the US Banks?
