Great news for those of you looking for high-quality, organic milk! Zaycon Foods is now delivering non-homogonized, whole milk from grass-fed cows to the Portland Metro area and SW Washington the second week of June!

Each gallon is $5.99 and you must purchase in multiples of four (so the minimum order is 4 gallons = $23.96. Consider splitting an order with a friend or two!). Yes, $6 a gallon for milk is double than what you’ll find in the store, but this milk is different:

  • All natural
  • GMO free
  • Non-homogenized
  • Low heat vat pasteurized
  • Hormone and antibiotic free
  • From grass-fed cows

This milk is from Spokane’s Family Farm. I tried this milk the last time it was delivered and it is the closest in taste, texture, and quality to raw milk I have found. I believe the equivalent milk from New Seasons is about $12 per gallon (non-homogenized, low-heat pasteurized). This milk is in plastic jugs though and not glass jars like the New Seasons product.

If you’ve been thinking of switching to raw milk for the health and taste benefits, but don’t want to shell out $10 per gallon or go through the hassle of finding (and driving to) a local raw milk farm, this is a good alternative.

Zaycon is bringing milk to Portland, Gresham, Oregon City, Tigard, Wilsonville, Vancouver, and Camas the second week of June.

    Hello,
Great to see the details. I was interested in getting the milk. I am from Orenco, Hillsboro area. Is there any nearby location wherein I can get the milk ?

    Regards,
    Komal.

I have a general question about Zaycon. I notice that all the local pick-up spots are at churches. Are they fundraisers for the churches?

No. The churches are convenient and they don’t interfere with businesses. Our church offers it’s parking lot because of location. Zaycon donates what they are delivering to the church.

Does anyone have experience freezing this milk?

I’m sure it will freeze fine, but you probably won’t want to drink it — thawed milk works best in baking and cooking.

Here are 3 informative links. Raw or unpasteurized milk has THEORETICAL health benefits but PROVEN and WELL DOCUMENTED health risks with potentially deadly consequences, especially in children and those with compromised immune systems. I do not believe it is worth the risk for the alleged health claims. Just my opinion as a mom and MS in Microbiology. This (zaycon) milk is not raw.

I hadn’t heard of raw milk before this. Can someone please explain what it is and what are the advantages over other milks? Or link me to a primer on the subject?

This milk is not raw and it is not technically organic, though it is minimally pasteurized.

As for raw milk, people are very passionate about that subject and there is a vast amount of information about raw milk on the internet. Just Google “raw milk Oregon” and you will find plenty of information. I personally am not supportive of raw milk, especially for children (due to the risk of illness and death from bacterial infections), but I think that is just the RN in me. 🙂

      Excerpt from Real Milk:

“Pasteurization destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamin content, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamins C, B12 and B6, kills beneficial bacteria, promotes pathogens and is associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth problems in children, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and cancer.”

My family has been consuming unpasteurized (raw) milk for six years. Our kids started on the milk at ages 6 and 8. They are extremely healthy with little to no allergies. Although there have been outbreaks of ecoli in the raw milk industry, raw milk is still incredibly safe. It’s safer when we, the consumers, choose good farmers with impeccable cleanliness and milking practices as we do. We think the health benefits far outweigh the risk of infection. http://www.foodrenegade.com/government-data-proves-raw-milk-safe/, http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/08/31/us-government-data-proves-that-raw-milk-is-safe.aspx. It is worth researching. I did a TON of research on the subject before deciding it was what I wanted for my family. This is an Oregon Farm working to make raw milk practices safer in our state:http://champoegcreamery.com/. Zaycon is a good alternative for those who don’t want to spend $10-$16 per gallon for raw milk, or who just aren’t ready to choose raw milk for their families. It is a much better option than ‘store bought’ milk.
