I cannot believe the information I have received. Marissa, a reader from Happy Valley, OR, gets the reader-of-the-month award. On a recent trip, she purchased two Hormel products that were on a BOGO meat sale at Albertsons. She tried to use (2) $1/1 coupons — one on the item she purchased and one on the free item. Her cashier told her she could only use one manufacturer’s coupon.
Most of us would have stopped there. Not Marissa. She took the issue up with corporate. Here’s the response from the Division Front End Manager for Albertsons Corporate (bolded text mine; I also added some paragraph breaks to make it easier to read):
Our policy on coupons for free items is that the coupon redemption value may not exceed the price of the item.
Yes- you can use two manufacturer coupons on a buy one get one free promotion-One coupon for each item as long as the manufacturer coupons do not exceed the amount of purchase.
For example a customer purchases a BOGO box of cereal for 2.99. The customer presents two .50 cent off manufacturer coupons. The 2/.50 coupons do not exceed the 2.99 price so accepting the coupons would be within the terms of agreement. Our policy also states that if the 2 coupons together exceed the amount of the one item being paid for, only one coupon would be accepted. If you had doublers along with the 2/.50 cent coupons you would still only be at $2.00 off for the cereal and that is perfectly acceptable.
Apparently, this policy has been in place since February 2010. This manager is supposed to reiterate this policy to all Albertsons managers in our region. I so wish I would have known this when my cashier (at Marissa’s store!) shut me down for trying to use 2 coupons on the McCormick BOGO sale.
If you run into a problem, call corporate and BE NICE. Looks like they will solve the problem for you!
Note: using a manufacturer’s coupon on the free item in a BOGO store sale it totally legit. Both coupons will scan at the register and the store will be reimbursed by the manufacturer for both coupons. The issue is whether the cashier or store will accept the second coupon on the free item.
