Safeway: BIG coupon policy changes

There are three BIG Safeway policy changes.  One bad, and two good so lets count our blessings it’s not the other way around.

NO MORE PAPER AND eCOUPON STACKING:  I was able to pull this off last week, but I have heard reports of people’s eCoupons reversing after scanning the paper coupon.  I’m sure this change is going to make it our way in no time.

JUST FOR U IS NOW FOR US: Just for U coupons were previously available only to Hawaii residents.  Now at the top of Safeway’s webpage is a big box inviting you to sign up.  It looks like you might get FREE eggs if you do it now!

ACCEPTING COMPETITOR CATALINAS: Remember the week or so that Safeway teased us by accepting Catalinas from Albertsons, Walgreens and so on?  Well it’s back?  I’m suspicious that this is a mistake.  If you want to do this I would suggest printing the Safeway coupon policy off the website, and hurry before they change it back. (Maybe it’s here to stay who knows!)

I was able to use paper coupons and ecoupons on the progresso soups yesterday, but not able to also use the safeway in-ad coupon for them. it wouldn’t go through b/c of teh ecoupons i think, since those came off automatically and then the in-ad coupon didn’t register. no problems with separate manufactors coupons with ecoupons (yet!) though.

I just signed up for the Just for U-it said on the opening screen free eggs, but don’t know how you get them-above it seems to not be for the NW area? Also gave my e-mail address, so maybe comes to that-will report back if so.
Did solve one great mystery-tried to load Safeway ecoupons last week & it only would take you to the printable ones-now I see after signing up for this-that it allows you to load their ecoupons, so looks like this is the way to do that now.

I tried to sign up for the Just for U and when I logged in, it said “Coming soon…Just For U.” and “We’re sorry, just for U is currently unavailable in your area.”

I was just at Safeway and majorly scored…I ws able to use e-coupons and paper coupons for the same item:
I purchased 4 tortillas, 3 barilla pastas, 2 cotonells, 2 creamers, 3 waffles, 2 pillsbury cookies, 3 hallmark cards, and 8 packages of ground turkey breast (regularly 6.49/pack), all for $27.16, and I have 8.00 to use on my next shopping trip catalinas. The cookies were on coupon for 1.99, I had two ecoupons for 1.00 come off and there were blinkies for 1.25/2 that I also used. No problems at all I also used a Fred Meyer catalina, and a Walgreens catalina on another transaction today with no problems at all! I asked my checker if the were once again accepting cats from other stores and she said yes…it wouldn’t take my Albertsons one for some reason…but the others were no problem! YEA!

If e-coupons come off first and you have no paper coupons, will you be able to double 4 coupons (or combination of paper and e coupons–total of 4)?? What if you buy 4 of something and u have only 1 e-coupon for x off of 2. Can u use a paper coupon for the other 2????? Will more than one e-coupon come off for the same item if you have more than one e-coupon for that item????? Oh so may questions. What if some e-coupons are higher in value than paper and other e-coupons are lower in value than the paper coupons, of course you would want to use all the higher priced ones, how do you do that???? My head is spinning from trying to figure out how all this works?? Anyone have the answers, please post if you do.
Does this apply only to safw\eway site or to cellfire, shortcuts and P&G ecoupons????? Thanks

I went to Safeway again today to stock up on TP and a few other items and indeed the register would not take off my Safeway ad coupon and the manufacturer coupon. I had to go back to Customer Service and have get my money back. This will be such a pain if I have to check each time that both the Safeway ad coupons and manufacturer ones come off.

Go back to your receipt if you have it and see what the price is next to your TP. if you bought 2 it should say 9.98 which is what the price was with the store q’s for 2. My receipt didn’t show the TP or pb sweet moments store q’s at the bottom either but it still gave me the savings as a combined card savings for what it was supposed to be w/ the q’s.
For some reason they no longer show up as scanned coupons at the bottom. The funny thing is even the cashiers don’t know what’s going on and give you all kind of crazy explanations like no more stacking store and mq’s. So, check that to verify.

I don’t see it as actually being spelled out in the policy, BUT I know this is in effect here because it happened to me the other day. The paper coupon beeped right after the cashier told me about the computer not accepting paper coupons and e-coupons together. The e-coupon didn’t come off though, the paper coupon just beeped. It’s here friends. Ah well.

I have noticed very recently that when they do the paper coupons-the ecoupons are right on the screen to see-so far they have used my paper coupon also-this is in Hillsboro on TV Hwy sunset esplanade. A friend of mine quit going to the 185th one because of hassels & goes to this one now & I think that was one of the issues.

I called the customer service number to ask about my free eggs, after signing up (as there was no prompt, coupon to print or load). The guy I spoke with said that the “just for U” promotion is currently for Northern California and has not rolled out for our zip code/state.
So, it will eventually, and there will be a free egg promotion then, but not now.
The e-coupons that loaded however are active!

I’m also really bummed to see stacking eCoupons go away, however, this is what I interpret from the SW coupon Poilcy:

Under “Manufacturer and Store Coupons” #3 states: “Coupons are subject to advertised offer limitations and all limitations and restrictions on coupon.” ….
Almost all coupons state “limit one coupon per purchase,” right?

Now, under “Load to Club Card Coupons” #21 states, among other things: “…All other coupon policies above apply to electronic coupons that are loaded to a club card.”

It’s not totally clear, I know, but I think this policy is very much implied and can be interpreted this way. Of course, as I commented earlier, I think it was inevitible that they would “fix” this, so maybe I’m reading too much into their policies.

Again, I’m glad we were able to stack them as long as we did. : )

I have noticed that several times my e coupon do not come off the card even when they are on there 24 hours ahead of time and I use a manufacter coupon as well. Thanks for the heads up about the policy change!

I have read the policy twice and still don’t see where it says you can’t stack them anymore…..somebody guide me? I am reading it with a crying baby on my lap, so that may be a distraction 🙂

I agree with Laurie P, the stacking of coupons (ecoupon/paper) is listed under the Hawaii ONLY section. In the section for our area, it states for ecoupons “All other coupon policies ABOVE apply to electronic coupons that are loaded to a club card”. The Hawaii only section is actually BELOW this section. No where does it state we cannot stack the ecoupons. I was able to do this transaction just last night and used both ecoupons AND paper. Maybe the main land stores are just mis interpreting this. Lets keep our fingers crossed that its just a mis understanding!

Re: IP coupons – our Safeway told us that if the IP coupons won’t scan, they aren’t allowed to accept them. The store manager also confirmed that when I asked him. That is a bummer, since sometimes they don’t scan!

I registered today but no free eggs. Anyone else get it? I am super dumbed about this change. It seems like Safeway keeps working the coupons for the worst. Albertson’s doesn’t have ecoupons but at least they are consistent.

I think the paper and e-coupon stacking policy is under the “hawaii only” portion of the policy?

I would love to be so irritated that we can’t use an e-coupon and a paper coupon anymore, but what’s the use. That’s our life as couponers, right? There’s always another deal around the corner.

Absolutely. And I always saw this as a glitch in the system that we were able to ever stack coupons at all. It was inevitible that they would “fix” this, so I’m just glad we were able to stack them as long as wew did : )
