Safeway: Skippy Peanut Butter Price Hike

Shared on October 27, 2011
This post may contain affiliate links which means I make a small commission if you make a purchase at no additional cost to you. See the disclosure policy for more information.

The prices on the Skippy Peanut Butter went up overnight. Instead of being $2.59 they are now $3.59 before the store promo and Catalinas. The new deal looks more like this:

Skippy Peanut Butter on sale $3.59
Buy 2 Skippy Naturals, Get $1 Catalina
Buy 4 Skippy Naturals
Get promotion savings (-$4)
Pay $6.36, Get (2) $1 Catalinas (yes 2 will print if you buy 4)
$2.09 each after Catalinas

That’s not nearly as smokin’ hot. They didn’t list any prices for these in the ad so there isn’t much we can do. They did this same thing with the Capri-Suns a few weeks ago. It can be a bit frustrating, and Safeway does want your business so if you really want you could always express your disappointment to them. Facebook seems to be the most effective pace for criticism when it comes to Safeway.

Make sure you check the current list of catalina promotions before you plan your deals.

I tried the deal and didn’t get the catalinas. The store manager was nice enough to call the catalina company and they said they didn’t have any such deal in their system. ??? This was the Mill Plain and 136th store in Vancouver.

Just got back from the Baker City store and the Skippy was $3.59 or $2.59 if you purchased 4 with club card. I purchased 4 and got two $1 catalinas

The Bend, OR (by Costco) store had them for $2.59 last night. Used doubles and received catalinas. All went well.

Safeway has been doing this a lot lately. Items are advertised as “on sale” with no price, ie. BOGO. When you get he the store the price is much higher than when it isn’t “on sale”. Ex. Chips on BOGo, each pkg is marked as 4.99 as their regular price when just the week before they were only 2.99. Or Sodas, when the do the B2G2, the 12 pks are marked up to 6.99 each! When they are not “on sale” they are 4.99. It’s so irritating. I have been shopping at FM more and more lately because if it. It’s very sneaky, and I cannot believe they think people are not noticing.

I am becoming more and more furstrated with Safeway amnd their changes. I went to the store in Salmon Creek yesterday to buy halloween candy with printed coupons. I was told that they wopuld not double them because they are printed and that they would not accept the printed coupons either! I am so very close to boycotting Safeway altogether. Has anyone else ran into these sort of issues with Safeway? There were two other couponers in line with me and we ALL left our orders at the checkout. I did offer to oput my stuff back but the checker said they’d take care of it. Aparently this happens often at this store.

I’m from Albany, OR and our Safeway has been pulling the same stuff and I only go there when I absolutely have to. I am sooooooooo tired of the terrible customer service (although they do have a few wonderful employees) and the fact that some of the employees treat me like I’m some terrible person because I use coupons. I don’t clear shelves and I don’t hoard, but I do feed 8 people in our family and we go through a lot of food in a day, let alone a week. It sure seems like Safeway as a whole is being so deceitful about how they advertise and how they make their receipts so confusing. Unless you know to the penny how much you should be charged, they almost ALWAYS seem to mischarge me. Also I do know they don’t double internet coupons (learned the hard way, but took the stuff back) but ours still accepts printed coupons (I’m sure that will change someday).

The Safeway I shop at seems to be one of the few left that will double the internet printables. I have a couple cashiers who I will stand in line for because they are accepting of my coupons. No idea why they wouldn’t accept them. I know some Safeway’s have had problems with lots of fraud and its unfortunate a few rude couponers and a show have ruined it for the rest of us.

) Thanks Jennifer….I know not all stores are this ridiculous but ours sure is. I agree that some people have definitely ruined using coupons and bargain-hunting for the rest of us. Sad really. My mom taught me as a young child how to live on a tight budget and that it pays to use coupons and shop the sales. I love being able to buy my family nice things for such great prices (or getting them for free)! My husband works very hard to provide for us and our 5 girls. We live on one income and I love couponing because it gives me a sense of pride in the bargains I find. We not only use what we buy, but we donate alot and enjoy teaching our kids the importance of helping others. When I get things for such great deals it allows us to give even more. I absolutely LOVE helping other people! All of you giving couponers ROCK! ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes I too find the new receipts VERY confusing.
Also on the hershey’s $1 printed coupon-I used two last week-the first scanned fine the second didn’t-I had two bags-plus two nestle to get the buy 4 price.
I said put it all back then it’s for my church & I want a good price-the cashier then tried to rescan to see what bag accepted the coupon (as I had two different types of Hershey’s) & one did-so I got two of those. What frustrated me (it was after work & I was tired and achy also) was that even though I clearly had two bags of hersheys-he wasn’t going to override it.
Personally I only shop Safeway for very good sales & even then dread it. I used to shop there a lot before they got so fussy.
I mostly shop Rite Aid-a very coupon friendly store!!

FYI… Amazon has a price that is only slightly higher than the final price of this… then you don’t have to mess with catalinas left over, or going out to the store:

Skippy Peanut Butter, Natural Creamy, 15-Ounce Jars (Pack of 6)
    Subscribe & Save price = $12.77

Hit Washougal, WA Last night and they were out of the creamy so I got a raincheck and picked up 4 of the crunchy to do donate. Stopped at the Andreson store this morning and noticed the diff. price. Asked the Asst. Mgr about it since that had also happened to me with the Capri Suns. I asked if the different locations could charge different prices and he said that they could, usually lower to match another local store (Fred Meyer, Albertsons), but never higher than an ad price. Well, now I can see what really happened.

Thanks for your post because I thought it was weird about the Capri Suns I bought the other day and I was sure they were 99 cents wyb 4 but I thought I just remembered the price wrong (cuz they rang up $1.50. ) I didn’t think much of it until I read these posts today. I’m so thankful that we have these blogs to support each other and let others know about the good and bad of couponing. I want to be informed and I’m so tired of Safeway (specifically) ripping me off!

Newberg was totally out, but Grocery outlet had a double pack of Skippy’s extra cruchy 40 ounces each bottle, for $3.99 for the two total. . .!!! So, that is 80 ounces for $3.99!! They are close to date, but they had a TON!! So, I picked up two of the double packs for my family and 4 for a friend of mine. They probably had another 50 double packs. . .the expiration date is the end of November. . .

When I purchased my peanut butter yesterday, a couple of clerks were a little agitated over it and one said that it would likely be repriced. It was the only time couponing that I’ve ever been asked if I actually use that much of a certain product. (I had 8 jars).

Natural peanut butter expires a lot faster than the processed stuff (about 9 months compared to 2 years with unopened processed peanut butter), so that might’ve been why the clerks were sassy about it. Hope your family likes peanut butter. ๐Ÿ™‚

First, it’s none of the clerks business or anyone else’s for that matter. No one knows your family situation, how many people you’re feeding, if you’re cooking or baking with it, if you plan to donate, if you eat it everyday, take it to work, etc. And frankly, who cares.

You only bought 8 and the jars are small. I have a family of 3 and I bought 8 jars. Yup, it expires much quicker but I bake a lot of peanut butter treats so I’m not at all concerned. Didn’t want to get stuck paying 40% more when I do need it.

My cashier was fabulous and I broke my purchases up into 3 transactions and she still didn’t get annoyed. Transaction 1: 4 jars of peanut butter and 4 jars of spaghetti sauce. Same for Transaction 2 but used my $2 in cat’s from Trans 1. My 3rd transaction was for oil (no coupons but it was B1G1) and I used my $2 cats from transaction #2.

I did buy the peanut butter with holiday cookie baking in mind (and sandwiches too). It was just an odd interaction because I’ve not ever had anyone say anything before.

I’ve had a problem with several catalinas not printing lately (now that I’ve learned what catalinas are and how you find out about them). The first time one didn’t print for me when it should have, I asked an employee about it, he told me that they are trying to save paper and that the catalina will load onto my Safeway card and just come off my next purchase automatically. Are you kidding me, do I really look that stupid? (that’s what I thought anyway) I don’t know if he was convinced of what he was telling me or if he just thought it would be funny to “doup” a couponer. Safeway is unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable!

I did e-mail customer service about the Capri Suns and pretty much was told that since a price wasn’t listed in the buy 4 save 4 they could do what they wanted (well not this exactly but that is the way I understood it). I haven’t been to Safeway today to check out the peanut butter but will later on and see at my store. I am curious. I do like Safeway and their deals but this seems sneaky and frustrating.
