The ebb and flow of the Mighty School Year
Last May, approximately halfway through the month, my brain decided it couldn't handle one more second of backpacks, carpools, paperwork, snack days, early mornings and ROUTINES. It was hard. I definitely think there is a reason we ease our kids (and ourselves) into this school thing. I was craving some freedom and lazy cartoon mornings in our pajamas and waffle days and being able to keep the kids up past 7:30 without triggering a major meltdown the next day. Then school was over and I was faced with the harsh reality that I now had to go to the grocery store with TWO CHILDREN. Getting out of the house took 72 times longer and there were Keep Reading
Still My Baby (or how the heart feels when the little one leaves the nest)
Our oldest son is in fourth grade at a private Montessori school. We know all the parents, all the kids, all the kids' siblings, everything there is to know. Our youngest has come with me to pick up and drop off and every school BBQ and picnic and event. He went to kindergarten with most of these kids' siblings, he plays baseball and YMCA soccer and flag football with all of them. So when he started first grade this year at the same school as big brother, I didn't even give it a thought. Old hat, I said. He was super excited when he woke up, although he kept telling me he was embarrassed because he didn't know ALL the kids. Coming from Keep Reading
Tips and tricks to help your child pack their own school lunch (and not die of frustration)
Our oldest son is in his second year at a Montessori school that fosters and preaches and attempts to ingrain independence (as most Montessori programs do). I packed his lunch for him every day last year, even though his teacher suggested that he do it himself. I just couldn’t do it. I had no system in place. He is the slowest slowpoke on the planet. How would he know what to pack? Would I end up doing it for him anyway? Would he pack 4 bananas and a piece of cheese? Would I be nagging him all morning every day of my life? See, I’m a bit of a control freak. And he’s a bit of a fly by the seat of his pants kid who couldn’t care less when and if Keep Reading

Portland Family Fun Guide: A Day in Salem
A Day in Salem, Oregon Since having kids, I have come to appreciate the Salem area more than ever. It is incredibly family friendly and if money is tight and a full fledged vacation is out of the picture, Salem would be the perfect location for a “staycation.” Here is a list of just a few of our favorite destinations in Salem. Pre-Outing Coffee Stop: Broadway Coffeehouse Broadway Coffeehouse is our favorite locally owned coffee house. Here coffee is an art, but they are not pretentious about it. Bring the family along and find the perfect spot to sit down somewhere within their spacious building. They serve Stumptown coffee and Keep Reading

Go here for links to all posts. Welcome to Battle Ground, Washington! The city’s unusual name comes from an anticipated battle between U.S. soldiers and Native Americans who lived near the fort—but the battle never occurred. Weird, huh? Battle Ground is a little bit north of Vancouver and Portland, and it’s easy to find from I-5 (just about an hour from Portland and 30 minutes from Vancouver). There Keep Reading
