The weather is getting warmer and we are all starting to dust off our short sleeves and shorts and dresses and flip flops, wondering if anything still fits from last year or thinking about how we are going to replace our favorite tank that got stretched out from too much use.
I did a Facebook Live video recently all about my top three summer fashion essentials. These are not things like a new fancy purse or summery Sam Edelman wedges from Nordstrom. These are the basics, the nitty gritty items to get you through the summer feeling fresh and NOT like a sweaty, frazzled mess.
And make sure you sign up for our weekly Fashion Friday Deals email. You’ll get a short list of what’s on sale and what fashion thangs we’re excited about, just in time for some weekend shopping. Go HERE to sign up.
GET THE BASICS!
One of the keys to summer is having some basic solid pieces in your wardrobe. Tanks and tops that you can wear with shorts or jeans, that can go under a cardigan or light sweater, that pair well with skirts. Summer is often spent at the beach, at the park, chasing after our kids at the pool. We aren’t trying to be super fancy, we are trying to look cute while feeling cool and comfortable at the same time.
Target is running one of their famous $5 tee and tank sales this week! Several different styles and colors available. I recommend going in to the store and trying on the different styles to find your favorite, as each one is going to fit your body type differently. You can also order a few different styles and sizes online and return those that don’t fit in store (shipping is FREE with orders of $35+).
If you stain or stretch or shrink or lose a $5 tee, the world is not going to end. Click here to browse and shop.
If you are in a stage where you feel shorts just aren’t super flattering or you are in between wanting to wear short shorts or bermuda shorts that never seem to fit quite right, consider an A-line dress! These two styles from Amazon have a very flattering cut that starts a bit of flare right above the waist and can easily be dressed up or down.
The Flared Tank Dress comes in TONS of different colors and is less than $20, pair with anything from flip flops to Converse to wedges. Throw a jean jacket or light cardigan over top and you have a great little outfit with not much fuss.
The A-Line Cap Sleeve Dress is just under $25 for most colors and sizes and would be super cute with wedges or heels for an outdoor wedding, a baby or bridal shower or date night.
SMOOTH IT OUT
If you love the idea of wearing dresses or skirts this summer instead of shorts but can’t see how you will ever solve the “I’m so hot that sweat drips down my legs and chafing is just my cross to bear” problem, I have a solution for you!
These Soma Smoothing Shorts help prevent static, lightly smooth out any bumps or lumps and help contain the sweat. You can wear them with or without underwear and there will be no visible panty lines. These are NOT Spanx, they are a light shapewear that just helps smooth out all the rough spots AND can prevent that thigh-rub chafing.
These would also be perfect if you live in a windier climate or have a small child who seems to think lifting up your skirt or dress is appropriate in the middle of any crowded area.
They come in several different colors to closely match skin tone. If you are anywhere in between sizes or unsure about where to go, I recommend sizing up. This will help eliminate any potential muffin top that would come from anything marginally too tight.
You can purchase these in store or online. Online they are $26 each or 2 for $39, so you could even go in with a friend. It looks like if you sign up for their email newsletter, you will get 20% off.
FLIP-FLOP WORTHY FEET
Now that we are wearing sandals and flip flops and even walking around barefoot, our feet start to look like something out of The Hobbit. Pedicures are SO amazing but can get SO spendy if you’re using them as a strategy for keeping up with foot care. This Microplane Pedicure Rasp (or Foot File) is under $10 and is so similar to one of the tools they use at your local nail place.
Use it on your heels and big toe area on a fairly regular basis to get rid of dead skin and help exfoliate those feet. NOT EVERY DAY. I recommend reading the reviews because 1. they are hilarious and 2. people share their horror stories about getting too ambitious with the foot file and not being able to walk for days. READ THE REVIEWS. And then buy it. You’re welcome.
